Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tarleton State Women’s Basketball’s fourth quarter comeback comes up short at SUU

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Tarleton State Women's Basketball looked to once again turn Southern Utah's double-digit lead into a Texan win, but the Thunderbirds were the ones that came out victorious 76-69 on Wednesday night at America First Event Center.

The Texans were down by as many as 18 in the fourth quarter and cut it as close to five points in the final period. Southern Utah, however, held on to snap its seven-game losing streak over the Texans.

Senior guard Jakoriah Long led the Texans with her third 20-point game of the season, pouring in 20 points to go with five assists. Senior guard Gia Adams added 14 points while senior guard/forward Kyriana Jones and junior forward Shadaisa Brackens added 11 points each. Southern Utah's Ava Uhrich led all scorers and rebounders with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Southern Utah forced the Texans into a pair of turnovers to start the first quarter, turning the turnovers into a pair of baskets. Jones responded with a pair of baskets of her own to tie the score early in the opening period.

The Thunderbirds answered with a 3-pointer after a jumper before a trey from Brackens made it a one-possession game. Southern Utah ended the opening period with seven unanswered points to go up by nine.

With Southern Utah continuing its scoring run with five quick points in the second quarter, Tarleton State eyed a comeback similar to the one put together 11 days earlier. The Texans went on an 8-0 scoring run while holding Southern Utah into a scoring drought that lasted nearly five minutes.

The Thunderbirds, however, refused to fall victim to another Texan comeback. Southern Utah answered with two straight baskets while holding the Texans scoreless in the last two minutes of the second quarter. The Thunderbirds forced the Texans into nine first half turnovers while shooting over 41% to go into the locker room ahead by nine.

Freshman center Elodie Lutbert opened the third quarter with a layup, but Southern Utah answered with two straight buckets to make it an 11-point game. After a second chance basket from junior forward Allie Myers, Southern Utah responded with a 3-pointer and maintained a double-digit deficit. The Thunderbirds shot 53.8% for the third quarter to take an 11-point lead going into the final period.

Six unanswered points allowed Southern Utah to go up by 18 with seven minutes left to play. The Texans, however, refused to quit and scored five unanswered points to go with a pair of free throws to make it a 10-point game. Long's 3-pointer with two and a half minutes to play made it an eight-point game, but Southern Utah struck right back to go back up by 10.

After a pair of free throws from Adams once again trimmed the deficit to eight, Long knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a five-point game with 17 seconds to go. The Texans were unable to get the steal needed and Southern Utah made the last two free throws to seal the win.

Tarleton State wraps up its Utah road trip with its second game in St. George Saturday, taking on Utah Tech at 2 p.m.
