Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Grant Cohen

Strong third quarter not enough to push Tarleton State Women’s Basketball past Utah Tech

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Tarleton State Women's Basketball erased a 16-point halftime by making it a seven-point game going into the final period, but Utah Tech held firm and defeated the Texans 76-55 on Saturday afternoon at Burns Arena.

The Texans came out of the half making 10 of its first 16 shots in the second half to move within striking distance. Utah Tech, however, used 60% shooting in the fourth quarter to go back up by double digits and come away with a win.

Senior guard Jakoriah Long led Tarleton State's scorers with 20 points, her fourth 20-point game of the season. Long needs just four more points to reach 1,000 career points for her Tarleton State career. Freshman center Elodie Lutbert had her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Utah Tech scored the first two field goals of the game and made two free throws to take an early lead in the opening period. The Trailblazers got another easy layup to extend the advantage before three straight baskets from the Texans pushed the Purple and White in front. A trio of triples from Utah Tech, however, allowed the Trailblazers to retake the lead.

The Trailblazers grabbed seven offensive rebounds in the first quarter, but the Texans' defense held Utah Tech to just 27.3% shooting in the first quarter. Tarleton State's 41.7% shooting in the opening period made it a two-point game entering the second quarter.

A 3-pointer from Long made it a one-possession game before Utah Tech went on a 13-3 scoring run to go up by nine points entering the media timeout. Utah Tech answered again with another 3-pointer while holding Tarleton State scoreless for five minutes to take a double-digit lead. Long ended the scoring drought with a layup with two and a half minutes to play before Utah Tech fired right back with a score.

Utah Tech outrebounded Tarleton State 31-16 in the first half while forcing the Texans to shoot 24.1% in the first 20 minutes. The Trailblazers took advantage by stretching the advantage 36-20 going into the locker room.

The Trailblazers picked up right where they left off to open the third quarter, converting a basket while drawing the foul on their first possession of the second half. Utah Tech continued to strike on offense by knocking down a 3-pointer to go up by 20.

Tarleton State, as it has previously shown, refused to quit. After a basket from freshman guard Nyah Buntun, the California native found Long for a 3-pointer. Long followed suit by going to the basket for back-to-back layups to make it a 10-point game. Buntun and Long kept the Texans' comeback intact by each converting a basket to make it a six-point game.

64.3% third quarter shooting from the Texans allowed Tarleton State to move within striking distance entering the final period. The Texans looked to complete the comeback this time, only trailing 51-44 with 10 minutes to play.

Utah Tech, however, had other plans in mind. The Trailblazers opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and a jumper to go back up by 12. Long once again answered with a layup, but Utah Tech hit another 3-pointer and a layup to maintain its double-digit advantage.

The Trailblazers outscored the Texans 16-4 in the fourth quarter, allowing Utah Tech to take a 21-point win.

Tarleton State returns to Stephenville next week for the final two home games of the season. The Texans start with a Thursday night outing against Utah Valley at the EECU Center at 7 p.m.
