Utah Valley sweeps season series, defeats Tarleton State Women’s Basketball at home

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Utah Valley won its third game of the season against Tarleton State Women's Basketball, defeating the Texans 65-51 on Thursday night at the EECU Center.

The Wolverines shot 50% or better in three out of the four quarters, making six of their last nine shots in the final period. Tarleton State cut the deficit to four points two minutes into the final period, but a five-point offensive possession sparked Utah Valley and allowed the Wolverines to seize control of the closing minutes.

Utah Valley's Cambree Blackham and Kaylee Headrick led all scorers with 19 points, with Headrick obtaining a double-double with 10 rebounds. Senior guard Jakoriah Long scored her 1,000th career point at the 5:30 mark in the first quarter, becoming the 23rd 1,000-point scorer in program history. She finished with 12 points to lead the Texans in scoring on Thursday night.

Utah Valley began the game scoring the first two baskets before a bucket from Long made it a one-possession game. After Long's free throws put her at the 1,000 career points mark, the senior guard followed with a four-point play to tie the game with two and a half minutes to go in the opening period. A 3-pointer by Utah Valley followed by a jumper, however, allowed the Wolverines to retake the lead.

Momentum was on the Texans' side as the first quarter came to a close thanks to a 3-pointer from junior guard Caroline Lyles. 50% shooting from Utah Valley allowed the Wolverines to take a two-point lead after the first period.

After a layup from junior forward Allie Myers made it a two-point game, Utah Valley seized control on both ends of the floor. The Wolverines went on a 9-0 scoring run over and held Tarleton State scoreless for five minutes to go out in front by double figures. Four points from senior guard Gia Adams over the final minute of the half cut Utah Valley's lead to nine points going into the locker room.

Utah Valley built off its strong first half and maintained its double digit lead in the third quarter. The no quit mindset of the Texans was in full force in the third quarter, with Tarleton State going on a 9-0 scoring run to make it a one-possession game. A basket while drawing the foul from junior forward Shadasia Brackens capped off the Texans' scoring run and made it a three-point game with 44 seconds left in the third period.

The Wolverines answered with a free throw, but the Texans held Utah Valley to just over 21% shooting in the third quarter to make it a game going into the final frame. The Texans continued to answer in the second half with a jumper in the fourth quarter, but one Utah Valley possession changed the game.

Blackham converted a layup shortly after Tarleton State's score, drawing the foul in the process to make it a six-point Utah Valley lead. The Wolverines got the rebound after her missed free throw and Headrick made the Texans pay with a 3-pointer to take a nine-point lead. After going out in front by double figures once again, Utah Valley finished the fourth quarter outscoring the Texans 23-13 and making two thirds of their shots in the last 10 minutes.
