Texans secure series sweep behind strong pitching performance at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday afternoon

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Tarleton State (16-7) used timely hitting and a dominant effort on the mound to secure a 3-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin (13-12) on Sunday afternoon, completing the series sweep at Jaycees Field.

The Texans struck first in the fourth inning when Cage McCloud reached base and advanced into scoring position before Ike Shirey delivered an RBI single to give Tarleton State a 1-0 lead. Tarleton State continued to apply pressure in the fifth inning, as Kendyl Johnson drove in Jake Tatom with an RBI single to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Tarleton State added an insurance run in the sixth inning after Slade McCloud reached base and moved into scoring position, setting up another RBI single from Shirey to push the lead to 3-0.

The pitching staff turned in a strong collective performance, limiting the Lumberjacks to just one run on five hits. Stephen F. Austin threatened late in the ninth inning with a solo home run, but the Texans maintained control to close out the victory.

Conner Doucet earned the win in relief for Tarleton State, improving his record to 2-0 on the season after tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Anthony Treto secured his first save of the year, working the final three innings and striking out four while surrendering one run. Brendon Carter, Aden Lucas, Ben Bosse, and Jack Lovin also contributed scoreless appearances as Tarleton State utilized six pitchers in the win.

With the victory, Tarleton State extended its winning streak to four games, beginning with Tuesday night's win over No. 2 Texas and continuing through the weekend series sweep of Stephen F. Austin.

The Texans will return to action Tuesday, as Tarleton State travels to Beaumont, Texas, to face Lamar, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
