STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State sophomore right-hander Cort Lowry delivered a dominant performance on the mound on Saturday against New Mexico, earning him WAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.
"Cort was about as dialed in as I have seen him in the two years," head coach Fuller Smith said. "He pitched really well and allowed our team to have success in the process."
Lowry turned in a standout outing for the Texans in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he allowed no hits and no runs, while striking out seven batters and issuing three walks as Tarleton State rolled to a 7–3 victory. Lowry's start nearly set up Tarleton State to approach a no-hitter, falling just two outs short of its first no-hitter in nearly 30 years (1997).
Lowry has been effective early in the 2026 season, making four appearances and four starts on the mound. Across 12.2 innings, he owns a 2.13 ERA, allowing just four hits and three runs while striking out 18 batters. Opposing hitters are batting just .103 against him this season.
Tarleton State went a perfect 5-0 last week, winning its first-ever Power Four conference home game, and its second-ever Power Four conference game overall, defeating Baylor 6-5 on Tuesday. The Texans swept New Mexico in a four-game series for the second straight year, improving to 8-0 all-time against the Lobos. New Mexico entered the series at 12-1 overall, ending it 12-5.
Lowry's performance adds to the Texans' early-season momentum as Tarleton State continues to build on its strong start to the 2026 campaign. Tarleton State is now 11-5 overall with a five-game winning streak.
