STEPHENVILLE, Texas —
Victoria Cameron and
Jalen Cadet each earned WAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Cameron picks up her first outdoor WAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week selection in her season debut. The junior earned back-to-back selections last spring. Cadet earned his first WAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week selection. He earns his first WAC Weekly Honor after being named the WAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year just a few months ago.
After the third week of the season, the Texans have now had two female athletes earned WAC Women's Weekly Awards, and now three on the men's side. In each of the first three weeks of the outdoor slate, the Purple and White have had at least one weekly award recipient.
Victoria Cameron set the internet on fire this past weekend at the Texas Relays running, at the time, the fastest 100 meters in the world this year but is now ranked third. Cameron claimed her first Texas Relays gold medal after a bronze performance a year ago in the 100 meters. In the prelims she ran the third fastest time in 11.05 seconds before her record performance in the finals.
In the finals, Cameron ran off an 11.01-second performance to tie her school record and WAC all-time record from the West First Rounds last year. In her second race of the season, she was at the time the top time in the world before Gabby Thomas ran 11.00 just a heat later and now world-leader Shanoya Mikalia Douglas of Jamaica clocked in at 10.98 seconds. Cameron won by 0.05 seconds and controlled the lead the entirety of the race. The Stephenville, Texas, native, now owns the top time in the NCAA this year and is a lock to secure a spot in the top 48 times in the NCAA West to reach the West First Rounds.
Jalen Cadet earned his first Texas Relays medal in his Texan debut at the event in the men's long jump. Cadet opened his outdoor long jump season with a best leap of 7.66 meters. The senior posted three jumps over 7.50 meters with his best coming on his fifth attempt. Cadet entered the finals as the fifth best jumper. He leapt ahead of two jumpers by a half of an inch on his fifth attempt to secure the medal.
With his best leap of 7.66 meters, Cadet now stands as the 28th best in the NCAA this season. In the West region, Cadet is ranked 11th. He will need to stay in the top 48 to earn a bid to the NCAA West First Rounds in Fayetteville, Ark. at the end of May. With his best wind-legal (2.0m/s) jump of 7.54 meters he now has the seventh best mark in program history.
Tarleton State Track and Field will have its full team back in action next week on Friday at the Baylor Invitational on April 10 at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.
