TOPEKA, Kan. – The TexAnns finished up play at the Washburn Classic Saturday in Topeka, Kan. with a 3-0 loss to host Washburn in the first game, and a 3-0 victory over Southwest Baptist in the late game.
In the first game of the day, Tarleton faced a tough Washburn team. The TexAnns dropped three straight games 20-25, 9-25 and 15-25.
Tarleton continued its struggles, hitting just a .035 attack percentage for the match, including a -.118 percentage in game two.
The TexAnns were led offensively by Flynn Harrell, who had 12 kills, and Jessie Hartman, who contributed 24 assists. Rachel Wolf added seven kills for Tarleton.
Defensively, Shea McBrearty led the way with 13 digs, while Paige Hamilton, Wolf, and Hartman all had seven digs.
Washburn dominated the TexAnns on defense, collecting 10 blocks as a team, including five from Mollie Lacy. Molly Smith led the Lady Blues with 14 digs, while Aubri Renshaw had 12 digs and seven kills. Amanda Guess collected 22 assists for Washburn, with Abby Wittman contributing 11 assists in the match. The Lady Blues hit a .359 attack percentage as a team.
In the second match of the day for the TexAnns, Tarleton got its first win of the tournament over the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist, 25-19, 26-24 and 25-16.
The TexAnns out-hit the Bearcats with a .349 percentage, compared to Southwest Baptist's .211.
Tarleton managed to break out of their slump, with a strong all-around performance. The TexAnns were led offensively by Flynn Harrell with 13 kills, while Rachel Wolf added 12 and Stacie Murrah added 11 kills. Jessie Hartman had an outstanding day, with 40 assists for Tarleton.
Paige Hamilton anchored the defense with 14 digs, while Shea McBrearty recorded 13 digs.
Southwest Baptist managed eight blocks as a team, but that was the only category in which they were able to top Tarleton. Ashley Jurgensmeyer collected 13 kills, while Brianna Wallace had 33 assists. The Bearcats were led defensively by Marcy Greenwade and Caitlyn Muder, who both had nine digs.
Tarleton finished the tournament with a 1-3 record, but got experience against a pair of ranked teams in #12 Truman State and #7 Washburn. The 14-5 TexAnns will return to action Thursday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. against Texas Women's University in Denton.
