STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton baseball team will resume Lone Star Conference action this weekend as the Texans host Southeastern Oklahoma in a four-game set beginning Friday, March 5, at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.
The Texans and Savage Strom will open the series with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and will then conclude the series with another doubleheader on Saturday. Saturday's twin-bill is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
The Texans (6-10, 3-9 LSC) are coming off a 1-3 trip to Eastern New Mexico last weekend, while the Savage Storm (11-6, 7-5 LSC) head into Stephenville after splitting a two-game non-conference series with Henderson Sate on Tuesday.
Junior first baseman/designated hitter Chris Casazza brings in a .377 batting average into the weekend series and leads the team with 20 hits on the season. He has six doubles, a home run and 10 runs batted in. Tarleton catcher Mark Jeffery (.360) and designated hitter/first baseman Zane Hensley (.339) follow Casazza in batting average, but all three players are tied for the team lead with 10 runs scored.
The Texans are led on the mound by junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Salt who brings in an impressive 1.88 earned run average in four starts this season. He is 1-1 on the year with a complete game and has allowed just five earned runs in 24.0 innings of work. The standout transfer has walked 11 and struck out 15 batters.
The Texans are batting a combined .277 as a team and post a 4.93 team ERA.
SOSU's Blake Gentry leads the Savage Storm with a .506 batting average and is tops on the team with seven doubles and 18 runs scored. He is tied with Seth Dutton for the team lead with 17 RBI. Dutton tops all Savage Storm players with seven home runs on the season.
Jimmy Johnson leads SOSU on the mound with a 3-0 record and a 3.50 ERA. He has walked seven and struck out 14 batters on the year. Heath Wyatt has appeared in 11 games on the season and has collected a conference-leading seven saves in 23.0 innings of work. He has not allowed an earned run all season and comes in with a perfect 0.00 ERA. He has fanned 19 batters on the season.
