CANYON – Tarleton State was dropped in straight sets, including a 29-27 second set marathon, by the No. 14 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs Saturday afternoon.
The TexAnns handed West Texas A&M its only loss of the season Sept. 17 at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville to end an 89-game losing streak against the Lady Buffs.
Tarleton State got the scoring started with the first two points with a WT service error and a kill by
Katie Covell.
The WT answered back to take four of the next six points and tie the score at 4-4.
The Lady Buffs then struck for an 8-1 run to lead 12-5.
Tarleton responded with an 11-7 push to cut the WT lead to three at 19-16, but could get no closer as West Texas went on to win 25-18.
In the second set, the TexAnns built an early lead and maintained a lead until the 14-13 mark.
West Texas then struck for a 4-0 push to take a 17-14 lead. The Lady Buffs then extended it to 21-17.
Flynn Harrell answered the call by landing a kill, off a set by
Danielle Barker, to start a 4-0 run which tied the score 21-21.
WT scored the next two points, then a WT service error, a
Jessie Hartman ace and a Covell kill shot set up the TexAnns with a game-point situation.
WT's Ashley Davis tied it at 24-24 with a kill of her own, setting up a 'win by two' situation for the rest of the set.
Tarleton's
Nikki McNorton gave Tarleton the immediate advantage with a kill from a set by Barker. WT answered right back, however, with another kill from Davis.
The teams swapped kills with
Breawn Waynes giving Tarleton a 27-26 advantage before West Texas ended the set with three straight kills to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Buffs used the momentum from the second set to dominate the third set.
After splitting the first eight points of the set, West Texas went on a 15-5 run to lead 19-9. WT went on to claim the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
McNorton led the TexAnns with 13 kills, paired with just two attack errors in 22 attempts gave her a team-high .500 hit percentage. The junior from Houston also had a team-high seven blocks.
Harrell added nine kills, but also had a team-high nine attack errors.
Hartman led the TexAnns with 21 assists, while Barker added 13.
Emily Klein, an Amarillo native, led Tarleton with 15 digs.
Tarleton will be on the road Tuesday against Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. before returning home for its final home stand of the season.
