TexAnns win fourth straight

KINGSVILLE - For the second straight game, the Tarleton State TexAnns (18-13, 12-7) won a five set thriller on senior night - unfortuantely for Texas A&M-Kingsville (15-14, 7-13), it came at their expense.

After taking the first set, Tarleton dropped the next two but rallied to take games four and five to maintain fourth place in the Lone Star Conference standings entering Saturday's season finale in San Antonio.

Over the first 13 points of the first set, Tarleton held a slim 7-6 lead.

Ashley Rine, however, landed a kill to start a 7-0 run to build Tarleton's lead to 14-6.

Kingsville cut the Tarleton lead to, as few as, three, but Flynn Harrell landed a kill to claim the first set 25-21.

TAMUK took a slim 11-10 lead to open the second set, but three TexAnn errors and a pair of Javelina kills extended the home team's lead to 16-10.

Tarleton rallied to score nine of the next 14 points and bring the TAMUK lead to 21-19, but the Javs ended the set by taking four of the next points to tie the match.

Kingsville continued rolling to begin the third set, building an 8-4 lead then extending it to 14-8.

The Javs dominated the front line in the third set landing 14 kill shots, including six straight and eight of their final nine points.

TAMUK appeared primed to take the set by jumping out the a quick 5-2 lead.

Audra Vaello, however, ended the early run with a kill and started a 5-0 TexAnn push to take a 7-5 lead.

The teams stayed tight as TAMUK built a slim 20-18 lead, while the scored was tied eight different times since the 7-5 mark.

At 20-18, Tarleton rallied behind four Kingsville errors, a kill by Vaello and two by Breawn Waynes to take the set and force game five.

Tarleton scored the first four points of the final set, as TAMUK never got to within less than two (7-5).

With Tarleton leading 11-7, the TexAnns ended the set on a 5-2 run with kills from Waynes and Katie Covell as well as a service ace by Jessie Hartman and a pair of TAMUK errors.

Harrell and Nikki McNorton led the TexAnns with 13 and 12 kills each, while Hartman (21) and Danielle Barker (20) led the team in assists. Harrell and Covell led the team defensively with 14 and 12 digs each.

Tarleton will finish the regular season Saturday in San Antonio against Incarnate Word at 2 p.m.
