Texans to host Mustangs Saturday

BACK TO ACTION
The Tarleton Texans will return to action for the first time since Saturday, Jan. 29 when the host the Midwestern State Mustangs at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5.
    
The two teams have been out of action since last Saturday because of the ice/snow storm.  The game that was scheduled for last Wednesday in Wichita Falls has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

TARLETON=BASKETBALL

Out of 275 NCAA Division II basketballs schools, the Tarleton Texans and TexAnns are one of just six schools that are on top of their respective conference standings.  The Texans are atop the South Division men's standings while the TexAnns are atop their standings as well.
    
The other schools are Findlay, Bentley, Drury, Metro State and West Liberty.

BASKETBALL 2
 The two Tarleton teams are a combined 30-6 this season, and they have the best combined winning percentage in the South Central region (.833).  Central Oklahoma is second with an .821 percentage (32-7), followed by Washburn with a .778 winning percentage this season (28-8).

STRONG AT HOME
The Texans are strong at home this season, going 11-0 so far in Wisdom Gym.  Tarleton has won 21 of its last 22 games in Wisdom, dating back to last season.  The Texans are on a 13-game home winning streak, dating back to Feb. 13, 2010.

WINNING AT HOME
The Texans have been tough to beat at home during Lonn Reisman's tenure.  Tarleton is 151-16 (.904) in the last nine-plus seasons, dating back to the 2001-02 season.  In Reisman's 22-plus seasons, the Texans have a 307-59 record in Wisdom Gym (.839).
    
The home record in the last eight seasons leads not only the LSC teams, but all of the NCAA South Central Region members, too.

HOME STREAK
The Texans are in the midst of a 13-game home winning streak – the fourth best since the 2001-02 season.  Tarleton had a streak of 33 (2004-2007) and 25 (2001-03) for the top two streaks in Wisdom Gym during that span. The third best is just two wins away for Tarleton at 14 (2003-04).

DEFENSE, DEFENSE
The Tarleton defense is ranked No. 1 in the nation scoring defense, allowing opponents to score an average of 51.6 points per game heading into this week.  Tarleton is No. 2 in the nation in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 36.5 percent from the field.
   
Thanks to the defense, Tarleton has the No. 4 scoring margin in the country with a plus-22.2 margin.

FORCING TURNOVERS

Tarleton is forcing lots of turnovers this season, but giving away less.  The Texans are No. 3 in the nation in turnover margin with a 6.8 margin in favor of the purple and white.
   
Part of turnovers is taking the ball away, and the Texans are No. 31 in the country in doing so, averaging 9.3 steals per game.

REBOUND THAT BALL
Heading into this week, the Texans are No. 14 in the nation in rebound margin (7.5).  The Texans have outrebounded every foe this season except Cameron, Texas A&M-Commerce, Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M.
   
Tarleton is outrebounding opponents by an average of 37.4 to 29.9.

LEADING THE TEXANS
Corin Henry leads the team with 13.2 points per outing and is the only Texan in double figures.  Devon Hills (8.7) and Carrington Tankson (8.1) are second and third, respectively.  Wes Dipprey leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per game while Donta Smith is second with 4.3 boards per outing.  Henry tops the squad with 33 steals and 70 assists.

SOUTH PLAY
The Texans are led by Corin Henry with 15.0 points per game during South Division play followed by Wes Dipprey with 9.7 points per game.  Dipprey leads the team with 7.36 boards per game during South Division play as Tarleton is outrebounding foes 34.5 to 29.8 and outscoring them 63.5 to 51.2.  Tarleton is averaging .427 from the floor, .381 from the arc and .711 from the charity stripe while holding opponents to .365, .326 and .639, respectively.

D-E-F-E-N-S-E

Tarleton is 9-2 this season when holding opponents to below .400 shooting percentage from the field.

OUTSCORING FOES

The Texans are outscoring foes 73.8 to 51.6.  The Texans'  biggest win of the season came against Arlington Baptist – 108-30 (78 points).  The smallest margin of victory is four at home against Texas A&M-Commerce (70-66).

SHOOTING TEXANS
The Texans are averaging .450 from the floor, .377 from the arc and .689 from the charity stripe while holding opponents to .365 from the field, .326 from the arc and .655 from the line.

NOW ON SPECIAL
Tarleton is outscoring opponents in points off turnovers (23.0 to 10.3) and points in the paint (33.6 to 17.4). 

OFF THE BENCH
Tarleton is averaging 32.2 points per game off of the bench this season as the Texans are outscoring opponents from the bench by 17.2 points per game (15.0 for opponents).

IN THE CONFERENCE

The Texans are first in the LSC in scoring defense, scoring margin, field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage, turnover margin (+6.78), offensive rebounds (13.6), rebounding defense and defensive rebounding percentage (.733).  Tarleton is second in rebounding margin (7.5) and offensive rebounding percentage (.390) and third in rebounding offense (37.4) and in assist/turnover ratio (1.0).

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State is 16-4 overall and 4-2 in the LSC South Division after downing West Texas A&M last Saturday at home, 69-54.  The last loss came at Incarnate Word in double overtime (90-83) on Jan. 22.  The Mustangs then defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road, 72-57.
   
Chris Hagan leads the team with 22.3 points per game while Michael Loyd is second with 12.4 points per outing.  Darrick Thomas tops the squad with 6.1 rebounds per contest while David Terrell is second with 5.7 boards per game.

The Mustangs are averaging .500 from the field, .370 from the arc and .673 from the line while opponents are shooting .404 from the floor, .300 from the arc and .664 from the stripe.  MSU is outscoring foes 80.4 to 63.2 and outrebounding them 37.8 to 30.2.

ALL-TIME SERIES
Midwestern State leads the all-time series that dates back to 1961, 37-18.  The Mustangs took all four games from the Texans last season, including a 71-56 victory in the second round of the South Central Regional held in Wichita Falls. 
   
Under head coach Lonn Reisman, the Texans are 15-19 against the Mustangs, including a 6-9 mark in Wisdom Gym.

The Texans will return to action on the road at Incarnate Word on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. in San Antonio.
