DURANT, Okla. - The Tarleton baseball team was handed their second straight loss after a tough battle with the Savage Storm in Durant, Okla.
The No. 15 Texans took a 3-1 lead after four and a half innings, but were unable to hold on as they dropped their record to 14-4 on the season.
Southeastern Oklahoma got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when they scored on an RBI single by K.C. Pfister.
That lead would not last long however as Tarleton would respond with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth.
Catcher
Andrew Kapple started the run when he was hit by a pitch, followed by a pair of walks by second baseman
Landon McCall and third baseman Junnior Dishmey. Kapple and McCall then scored on a defensive miscue by SEOKU that was hit into by leftfielder
Ethan Stuckly. To make matters worse for the Savage Storm, Dishmey then scored on a wild pitch to put the Texans up 3-1.
Tarleton enjoyed their lead for just a short amount of time as SEOKU answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to just one.
The Texans would strike again in the top of the seventh when
Travis Hayes scored Stuckly on an RBI fielder's choice for an unearned run.
Once again, the Savage Storm were able to answer with a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game at 4-4.
Tarleton attempted to take a lead in the tops of the eighth and ninth, but were unable to capitalize. Instead, the hosts, SEOKU, would get the deciding run on a walk-off, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to hand the Texans the loss.
Ryan Turner (3-1) was the pitcher of record for Tarleton after giving up the final run after 2 2/3 innings on the mound.
LSC preseason pitcher of the year Heath Wyatt (1-2) picked up the win for SEOKU with his 2 2/3 shutout innings.
The Texans' offense recorded just three hits in the game, and got their RBI's from Stuckly and Hayes.
Head coach
Bryan Conger expressed his disappointment after the game on Friday.
"Southeastern outplayed us in every aspect of the game," said Conger. "They deserved the win. Our effort level was unacceptable, but that will change."
Tarleton will face the Savage Storm for two more games on Saturday, with first pitch coming at 12 p.m. to start the doubleheader.
