AUSTIN - The No. 19 Tarleton women's tennis came up just short to St. Edward's Thursday 5-4 in Austin.
The TexAnns fall to 5-4 on the spring season, just when they were starting to hit their stride.
No. 50
Alicia Perez defeated Paige Rachel (7-5, 6-0) in No. 1 singles play, while Adrianna Jaskova defeated Carolina Fahnehjelm in No. 2 singles (5-7, 7-5, 11-9).
Melanie Barnes also won her match over Mary Bain (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) to round out the singles victories for Tarleton.
Doubles play made the difference once again for the TexAnns as they won No. 1 doubles action, but dropped the other two match-ups.
The partnership of Perez and Freitas won their match against Tompkins and Bain (9-8, 7-5) for Tarleton's only doubles victory.
Head coach
Lance Drake spoke about his girls' effort after the match.
"We went down 2-1 after doubles and going into singles, we knew we had to win four matches," said Drake. "We knew it was going to be extremely difficult due to injuries and the quality team we were playing, and fell one match short. I am very proud of the way the ladies fought. They tried hard to overcome, but came up a match short against a well coached St. Edwards team. We are taking spring break off and hopefully be able to regain some of our health and get our lineup back to full strength."
Tarleton returns to action March 27 when they travel Stephen F. Austin.
