OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Tarleton women's tennis team defeated Central Oklahoma in the first round of the Lone Star Conference tournament in Oklahoma City before falling to Midwestern State in the semifinals.
In the morning session, the No. 6-seeded TexAnns got revenge against a No. 3-seeded Central Oklahoma team that beat them just two weeks earlier.
The pairing of
Adriana Jaskova and
Melanie Barnes gave Tarleton their only doubles victory with an 8-6 win over UCO's Lacy Caldwell and Antonella Rossini in No. 2 doubles.
Trailing 2-1 entering singles play, the TexAnns knew they would have to have a strong showing in order to fend off being eliminated in the first round.
Tarleton was able to do just that with their No. 1-4 singles players winning their matches against the Bronchos. LSC Freshman of the Year
Alicia Perez defeated UCO's Julia Shviadok in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-2). Jaskova won her match over Elizabeta Abramovic in three sets as well (6-2, 4-6, 6-0).
Mariana Freitas swept Caldwell 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles, while Barnes gave the TexAnns the victory with her 6-3, 6-3 decision over Rossini.
WIth the win, Tarleton was set to face No. 2-seed Midwestern State in the afternoon match.
The doubles matches in the afternoon started off the same way with Jaskova and Barnes giving the TexAnns their lone doubles victory (8-5) over MSU's Leah Roberts and Abbie Lewis.
Unfortunately for Tarleton, they were not as successful in singles competition, with Freitas picking up the lone singles win in a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Lewis.
The TexAnns fought valiantly but the higher-seeded Mustangs proved to be too much for the fatigued Tarleton line-up.
With the regular season complete and the conference tournament championship out of their reach, the TexAnns will now wait to see if their season was enough to get them in the regional tournament.
