STEPHENVILLE - Tarleton (11-5, 6-2) suffered a hard-fought, five-set loss to No. 12 Angelo State (14-3, 7-1) in front of a packed crowd at Wisdom Gym Tuesday night.
The TexAnns came into play riding the momentum of a four-game winning streak and did not disappoint over the first three sets, taking the momentum and jumping out to a 2-1 lead going into the fourth game. Angelo rallied, however, to hand Tarleton just its second home loss of the season.
This is just the 10th time in the 34-year history of this rivalry that a match between Angelo and Tarleton has seen five sets.
In the first set, Angelo opened with a quick 4-2 push and never led by less than two until extending their lead to 16-9 later in the game. Tarleton answered with an 11-6 run of their own to bring it back to two at 22-20.
The Rambelles maintained their slim lead, however, and took the first game from the TexAnns 25-22.
in the second set, Tarleton got back on track - hitting .182 and holding Angelo to just an .091 hitting percentage - with an early 7-5 lead.
A kill by Ashley Rine extended the TexAnn lead to 8-5 and started an 11-3 TexAnn run - powered by kills from Stacie Murrah, two from Meg Umbel, a service ace by Danielle Barker and a slew of Rambelle miscues - to lead 18-8.
Angelo clawed back into the game, cutting the TexAnn lead to 21-19, before an attack error started a 4-1 run to give Tarleton the set 25-20.
Tarleton used an early run again in the third set as long service streaks from Kelsey Raglin, Nikki McNorton and Macie Walker built the Tarleton lead to 11-5. They eventually stretched it to 15-6.
Then Angelo struck for an 8-0 run before McNorton ended the streak with a kill shot to make the score 16-14 in favor of Tarleton. The TexAnns ended the set with a 9-5 run to take the set 25-19 and go ahead in the match 2-1.
In the fourth set, Tarleton led 5-4 but surrendered a 17-7 Angelo run to allow them to go up 21-12. The Rambelles went on to take the set 25-19 and the match after leading most of the fifth set, which they won 15-10.
Murrah and Umbel led the TexAnns with 11 kills each while McNorton added nine and Katie Covell chipped in seven. Umbel had a .435 hitting percentage, which was best among all player with at least two kills.
Danielle Barker just missed a double-double with 32 assists and nine digs while Covell led the TexAnns in digs with 18. Emily Klein (14) and Kelsey Raglin (14) also had double figure digs.
Tarleton will return to action Friday night at 6 p.m. when they host Texas A&M-Commerce in Wisdom Gym.
