No. 7 Texans face Texas A&M-Kingsville in first round of LSC tournament

STEPHENVILLE - The Texans are coming off their sixth Lone Star Conference regular season championship and will head into the LSC tournament with their sights on another trophy.  Tarleton was co-champions with Midwestern State for the regular season.  The Texans now meet Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the state-of-the-art Allen Event Center.  Tarleton defeated the Javelinas both times this season.

LAST WEEK
    The Texans (24-4, 15-3) defeated Angelo State on the road and Abilene Christian at home en route to second LSC Championship and sixth regular season title.  Tarleton scored 67 on the Rams and 74 on the Wildcats while holding both teams under 63 points.  Fabian Wilson averaged 22 points and 7.0 rebounds per game earning LSC Offensive Player of the Week honors.  Chris Harrell had a strong effort on the other end, picking up LSC Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

THIS YEAR
    On the season, Tarleton is shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, 32.4 percent from three-point land and 70.5 percent from the charity stripe.  The Texans are averaging 69.7 points per game and 35.1 rebounds per game.

HOLDING OFF OPPONENTS
    Opponent's are shooting just 37.7 percent overall and averaging 56.9 points per game against the Texans.  Tarleton is No. 2 in the nation in points allowed and No. 3 in field goal percentage allowed.

STATISTICAL LEADERS
    Fabian Wilson is averaging team-highs in points with 13.3 per game and rebounds with 7.0  per game.  Chris Harrell is chipping in 12.9 points and shoots 81.9 percent from the free throw line, while Shedrick Haynes adds 10.9 points and 3.5 assists each contest.

SIZING UP THE OPPONENT
    Texas A&M-Kingsville is 12-15 on the year, but easily qualified for the tournament with a 7-11 LSC record.  Tarleton defeated the Javelinas by two earlier in the season in Kingsville and cruised past them on the return trip, 63-52.
    The Texans lead the all-time series 30-21 dating back to 1969.  Kingsville did not make the postseason in 2010-11.
 
STOPPING THE JAVELINAS
    Overall, TAMUK is averaging 70.1 points per game and giving up 70.2 points to opponents.  The Javelinas shoot 42.2 percent from the floor, 33.0 percent from three-point range and 72.4 percent from the free throw line.
    TAMUK has the No. 8 scoring margin in the LSC and the No. 6 scoring offense.  The Javelinas do rank No. 1 in the league in free throw percentage, but are last in the LSC in rebounding margin.

WHO TO LOOK FOR
    Ashton Brown leads the team with 14.5 points per game and leads the nation in free throw percentage with a .961 mark.  Robert Williams is adding 14.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while Ryan Layssard and Deryl Nash are contributing close to 10 points per game.
    Brown is No. 5 in the LSC in scoring with Williams close behind at No. 6.

AMONG THE BEST
    The Texans are ranked near the top of almost every statistical category in the conference.
    Tarleton is No. 1 in scoring defense (56.9 ppg) and No. 1 in scoring margin (+12.9).  The Texans are also No. 1 in field goal defense (.377), No. 2 in three-point field goal defense (29.4) and No. 2 in rebounding defense (30.0).
    Individually, Chris Harrell is No. 12 in scoring (12.9 ppg), while Fabian Wilson is No. 3 in rebounding (7.0) and No.10 in scoring (13.3).  Shedrick Haynes is No. 7 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2) as well as No. 6 in assists (3.6). Harrell and Coleman Furst rank in the top four in free throw percentage.

WORKING TOWARDS ANOTHER LSC TITLE
    Tarleton locked up their sixth regular season title last Saturday in the Texans' win over ACU.  With the LSC not longer have divisions, it is a share of the championship. The LSC tournament champion will have the automatic bid in the NCAA tournament though.

REMAINING IN THE RANKINGS
    Tarleton was ranked No. 8 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Polls and No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference Preseason poll.
    The Texans are now No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the South Central Region.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
    The Texans will compete against the Javelinas of Kingsville in first round action of the LSC tournament in Allen.  If victorious, Tarleton will then face the winner of West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico on Friday.

REISMAN'S QUEST FOR 500
    Head coach Lonn Reisman recently accomplished the feat of win No. 500 at Tarleton.  He entered the season with a career record of 483-210.

DID YOU KNOW?
    Tarleton has reached the Lone Star Conference tournament finals each of the past two seasons.  The Texans have advanced past the first round the past eight seasons, including a championship in 2003-04.
