Texans and Wonder Boys battle in semifinals of South Central Regionals

STEPHENVILLE - The Texans have advanced to the second round of the NCAA South Central Regional tournament in Wichita Falls and will take on the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech Sunday at 5 p.m. in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.  Tarleton will face Arkansas Tech for a shot at the winner of Midwestern State/Washburn Tuesday night in the championship.  This will be the first ever meeting between the Texans and the Wonder Boys.

LAST WEEK
    The Texans (27-5, 15-3) used a fast start to the second half to take a 69-52 victory over No. 23 Missouri Southern State in the first round of the NCAA tournament.  Tarleton played strong defense and held the Lions to their second lowest point total of the season.  Fabian Wilson recorded his eighth double-double of the year while Chris Harrell, Wes Dipprey and Shedrick Haynes all contributed double-figure points.

THIS YEAR
    On the season, Tarleton is shooting 47.4 percent from the floor, 32.9 percent from three-point land and 70.2 percent from the charity stripe.  The Texans are averaging 68.7 points per game and 35.2 rebounds per game.

HOLDING OFF OPPONENTS
    Opponent's are shooting just 38.0 percent overall and averaging 56.0 points per game against the Texans.  Tarleton is No. 1 in the nation in points allowed and No. 4 in field goal percentage allowed.

STATISTICAL LEADERS
    Fabian Wilson is averaging team-highs in points with 13.1 per game and rebounds with 7.3 per game.  Chris Harrell is chipping in 12.4 points and shoots 80.9 percent from the free throw line, while Shedrick Haynes adds 10.6 points and 3.4 assists each contest.

SIZING UP THE OPPONENT
    Arkansas Tech is an unknown opponent for Tarleton as the two teams have never faced eachother.  Out of the newly formed GAC, the Wonder Boys are 25-5 on the year and winners of five straight games.  Arkansas Tech has also not lost on a neutral floor this season (5-0).
    Tarleton will have a tough match-up against the Wonder Boys with both teams coming off dominant first round performances.
 
STOPPING THE WONDER BOYS
    As a team, Arkansas Tech is averaging 76.8 points per game and holding opponents to 67.5 points each contest.  The inaugural Great American Conference Champions are shooting 44.5 percent from the floor, 40.7 percent from three-point range and 69.0 percent from the free throw line.
     The Wonder Boys led the GAC in scoring defense, three-point field goal percentage defense, and three-point field goals made.

WHO TO LOOK FOR
    Arkansas Tech is led offensively by Johnie Davis, who averages 20.3 points per game, and Jared Williamson, who contributes 12.3 points and 4.8 rebounds each contest.
    Davis was the second leading scorer in the GAC and led the league in steals with 2.3 per game.

LSC PROMINENCE
    Tarleton locked up their sixth regular season title and advanced to the LSC Tournament Finals for the third straight year  With the LSC not longer have divisions, it is a share of the championship.
    Since its inclusion in the LSC in 1994, the Texans have gone 150-76 for a winning percentage of .664.         

TOURNAMENT HISTORY
    Tarleton reached their first South Central Regional tournament in 2002.  Since then, the Texans have gone 13-6 in the tournament and advanced to two Elite Eights.  This marks Tarleton's ninth trip to the NCAA DII postseason.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
    The Texans will take on Arkansas Tech at 5 p.m. Sunday.  The winner will face the winner of Midwestern St./Washburn next.

DID YOU KNOW?
    The Texans have never faced Arkansas Tech before in the history of the program.  The Wonder Boys are the only team in the Regionals the Texans have not faced ever.
