STEPHENVILLE - For the first time since the 1998 season, the Tarleton TexAnns have started their conference schedule with a perfect 2-0 start after sweeping Cameron at Wisdom Gym Saturday and push their current win streak to five.
The also marked the fourth straight sweep for the TexAnns, which hasn't been done since Tarleton swept five straight matches in the 2008 season.
The teams battled through a hard fought first set with Cameron staying on top or tied until the 21-20 mark. A kill by Nikki McNorton tied the score at 21-21.
With a tied score, Tarleton scored on kills by Danielle Barker and Katie Covell and took advantage of two Cameron miscues to take the opening set 25-23.
Tarleton dominated the second game with long serving runs by Covell and Barker.
Covell landed a kill to make the score 4-3 Cameron and then stepped to the serving line where she served up five straight points to force an Aggie timeout at an 8-4 Tarleton lead.
After a McNorton kill pushed the TexAnn lead to 14-8, Barker served up seven straight points on the strength of two aces and five Aggie errors to extend the lead to 21-8.
Cameron had a small push, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the TexAnns went on to the 25-13 win.
In the final set, McNorton went on a serving streak of her own with seven straight points to allow Tarleton to jump out to a quick 10-4 lead.
Cameron would not come closer than four to the TexAnns and with Tarleton leading 20-14, the TexAnns ended the game with a 5-2 run to seal the win.
Covell led the team with 13 kills while Barker led the team in hitting percentage with .429 (three kills and no errors on seven attempts). McNorton added nine kills of her own.
Barker led the team with 38 assists while Emily Klein (16) and Kelsey Raglin (11) cracked double figures in digs.
The TexAnns will be on the road this week with a Tuesday match at Angelo State and a Friday match at Abilene Christian. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. start.
