WICHITA FALLS - The Tarleton Texans (8-4, 2-3 LSC) will look to bounce back from Wednesday's loss as the team travels to take on the Midwestern State Mustangs (10-4, 6-1 LSC) this coming Saturday, Jan. 10, 2013. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls.
QUICK HITS
• The Texans are coming off back-to-back losses for the first time since the 2010-11 season when Tarleton dropped the LSC Championship game to Central Oklahoma (68-52, 3/6/12) before falling to Midwestern State in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional (64-51, 3/12/11).
• The last time a Texan team dropped consecutive games in the regular season came back in the 2009-10 season, falling to MSU on Feb 3 and then again on Feb. 6.
• Wednesday's loss snapped an eight-game winning streak inside Wisdom Gym. It was the first loss since falling to Southwestern Assemblies of God in the season-opener.
• MSU is coming off a 74-66 loss to A&M-Commerce in Commerce on Wednesday.
• The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Mustangs and it was MSU's first loss in LSC play.
SERIES HISTORY
• MSU has dominated a series which dates back to 1961, collecting a 40-22 mark over the Texans during that span.
• MSU has won the last two games and three out of the last four. The Texans fell 57-51 to the Mustangs in last season's LSC Championship game in Allen.
• The two team's split the regular-season series with both home teams picking up victories.
• Last season's contest in Wichita Falls went three overtimes before MSU prevailed 80-75.
• Three out of the past five games between the Texans and Mustangs have been played on neutral courts during post-season play.
• Tarleton is just 19-22 against MSU under head coach
Lonn Reisman.
• Under coach Reisman, the Texans are 9-11 when facing the Mustangs in Wichita Falls (9-8 at home; 1-3 neutral site).
• Since 1989, the Mustangs have the series' longest winning streak, having won five straight from Mar. 5, 1995 thru Feb. 15, 1997.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
• Head coach Nelson Haggerty is in his second season with the Mustangs after taking over last season when former head coach Grant McCasland.
• The Mustangs finished the 2011-12 season tied with the Texans as Co-Champions of the regular season. MSU went 29-4 overall and 15-3 in league play.
• MSU went onto win the LSC Championship Tournament and won its third consecutive South Central Regional title. The Mustans then fell 64-63 ti Western Washington in the first game of the Elite Eight Championship.
• The Mustangs rank third in the LSC averaging 73.5 points per game. MSU ranks 5th in the league in scoring defense, allowing 66.4 points per game.
• MSU shoots 43.6 percent as a team from the field, which ranks eighth in the LSC. The Mustangs also shoot 31.0 percent from beyond the arc (9th LSC) and 67.2 percent from the charity stripe (4th LSC).
• MSU ranked 12th in the nation in rebounding margin on Jan. 6, with a +9.5 margin. Since then, the Mustangs have increased that margin to +10.5, which tops the LSC.
• Monzaigo Williams ranked 40th nationally with 5.2 assists per game, while Corbin Thomas - a two-time LSC POW - ranks 36th in the nation with four double-doubles on the season.
STILL LOOKING FOR FIRST ROAD “W”
• The Texans fell to 0-2 on the road this season after falling 72-67 to Incarnate Word on Saturday.
• Tarleton has now dropped three-straight games when playing away from Wisdom Gym, which includes the 64-63 overtime loss to Arkansas Tech on a neutral court.
• The last time a Tarleton team lost four straight games away from Wisdom Gym came back in the 2000-01 season (Feb. 3 thru Feb. 7).
WINNING AT WISDOM
• The Tarleton Texans are now 325-58 (.851) overall when playing inside the friendly confines of Wisdom Gym under head coach
Lonn Reisman.
• The Texans have posted a record of 199-25 (.892) at home under Reisman since the year 2000.
• Since joining NCAA Division II, Tarleton is 252-44 (.854) all-time at home.
TEXANS PICKING UP THE “D”
• Tarleton headed into it's game at Angelo State ranked 219th in the nation in field goal percentage-defense, allowing opposing teams to shoot 45.5 percent from the floor.
• Following its game with the Rams and a home game against ACU, the Texans moved to 110th in the nation allowing opponents to just 41.7 percent shooting from the field.
• Since the last NCAA rankings came out on Dec. 16, Tarleton ranked 104th.
MORE DEFENSE FOR THE TEXANS
• The Texans ranked 46th in the nation in scoring defense when the NCAA released its first set of national rankings back on Dec. 2, allowing opponents to score 62.4 points per contest.
• Tarleton ranked 14th in the nation in scoring defense on Jan. 6, allowing opponents to score just 59.7 points per contest.
• The Texans head into Saturday's contest at Incarnate Word now giving up just 58.5 points per outing.
PEGUES NOTCHES NEW CAREER HIGH
• A'Darius Pegues (F, Jr, Louisville, Ky.) scored a career-high 12 points in Tarleton's 64-53 win over Henderson State back on Dec. 18.
• The big man upped that career-high by a point on Wednesday, scoring a new career-high 13 points in Tarleton's 52-46 win.
• He had 11 points at the break, going 5-for-7 from the field over the first 20 minutes.
UPCHURCH KEEPS SCORING
•
De'Andre Upchurch (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) scored double-figures for the eighth time this season with 10 points in Tarleton's 52-46 win over TAMUK.
• Upchurch, despite not starting a game for the Texans, is second on the team with an 11.4 points per game average.
BLOCK THIS, WITH CATHEY-MACKLIN
•
Jon Cathey-Macklin (F, Jr, Milwaukee, Wis.) tied a career-high with a three-block game on Wednesday. It is the second time this season that Cathey-Macklin has three rejected shots in one game.
• Cathey-Macklin currently leads the team with 16 blocks this season. He currently leads the LSC with 1.45 blocks per game.
• He ranks 74th in the nation in the same category.
GIVING A HELPING HAND
•
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) dished out a game-high seven assists in Saturday's loss to the Cardinals.
• Guy has three games with five-plus assists so far this season.
CARTER CONTINUES TO LEAD LSC
•
Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) leads the league in field goal percentage shooting 87.5 percent from the floor over the course of the first 10 games this season.
• Carter is shooting .157 points better than WTAMU's Donald Sims, who currently ranks second in the LSC with a 71.8 shooting percentage.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
• When the newest national statistical rankings came out on Jan. 6, Tarleton ranked in the top-100 in six different categories.
• The Texans ranked 14th in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score just 59.7 points a game.
• Tarleton ranked ranked 83rd in scoring margin, averaging 6.9 more points than its opponents.
• Tarleton ranked 78th in field goal percentage defense, giving up just 40.9 from the floor to opposing teams this season.
• The Texans rank 24th in the nation in blocked shots, averaging 4.6 blocks per game as a team.
HOW THE LSC IS STACKING UP SO FAR
• The Texans were picked to win the LSC. Tarleton currently sits in a tie for third-place in the conference at 2-2.
• MSU, who was picked to finish second, leads the league with a 6-0 mark in conference games.
• WTAMU's Donald Sims was named the LSC's Preseason Player of the Year; he currently ranks 5th in scoring (14.9 ppg), first in rebounds (8.3 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.718).
OPENING UP THE LSC SCHEDULE
• Tarleton dropped its LSC opener for the first time since Jan. 14, 2009 with its five-point loss to Angelo State on Wednesday.
• The Texans are now 12-7 in LSC openers since joining the league in 1994.
TEXANS PICKED TO WIN LSC
• The Texans were selected to defend its LSC Championship, earning the No. 1 ranking in the preseason poll released by the league office on Oct. 25, 2012.
• Tarleton received 12 of a possible 29 first-place votes in the poll.
• Midwestern State received 12 first-place votes in the poll as well, but Tarleton took the top spot earning 269 total points to MSU's 262.
TEXANS DEBUT 2012-13 SEASON AT NO. 17 IN NABC PRESEASON POLL
• The Texans finished the 2011-12 campaign at No. 9 in the nation and head into the new season at No. 17 according to a preseason poll released by the NABC on Nov. 2.
• Tarleton was the highest ranked LSC team in the preseason poll. MSU debuts at No. 23 in 2012-13 after finishing No. 5 last season.
• Including the 2012-13 campaign, Tarleton has been preseason ranked inside the top-25 seven times.
TARLETON IN SEASON-OPENERS
• Tarleton snapped a 10-game winning streak in season openers after falling 73-60 to Southwestern Assemblies of God in the 2012-13 opening game. Tarleton fell to 21-4 in season-openers under coach Reisman.
• Tarleton's last loss in a season-opener had come back in 2001 against Wingate (73-83).
REISMAN AMONG WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES IN NATION
•
Lonn Reisman entered the 2012-13 season with a .702 winning percentage, which ranks 12th overall among active coaches in NCAA Division II.
• Reisman's .702 winning percentage ranks 26th overall among active coaches in both NCAA Division I and II.
TEXANS RANKED NO. 1 IN DEFENSE LAST SEASON
• The Texans finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in scoring defense for a second-straight year after allowing opponents to just 56.3 points per game in 2012-13. The Texans allowed just 53.3 points to finish no. 1 in 2010-11.
