Box Score PORTALES, N.M. – The Tarleton Texans (8-6, 2-5 LSC) dropped a heartbreaker to the Eastern New Mexico (6-9, 3-4 LSC) at Greyhound Arena in Portales, N.M. on Saturday night as a final possession three-pointer from the home team upset the Texans for the first time since 2007.
Tarleton outshot the Greyhounds 40.9 percent to 36.4 percent over the first 20 minutes to take a 26-21 lead into the break.
Coleman Furst (G, Jr, Denison) was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and led the Texans at halftime with nine points.
Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) came into the game off the bench tonight and poured in eight points for the Texans in the first period. Four of his eight points came from the charity stripe as the sophomore went to the line six times in just 11 minutes of playing time in the first half.
The game was tied at 12-12 with a little over 12 minutes left to play until ENMU's Rodney Blackmon poured in a jumper at the 10:57 mark to give ENMU a two-point lead. The Texan defense would clamp down on the Greyhounds though and did not allow ENMU to make another field goal until the 4:43 mark.
In that span of 6:14, Tarleton went on a 10-1 run to push its lead to 22-15 with less than five minutes still to play in the period. ENMU's field goal at the 4:43 marks was a three-pointer from Rafael Love and ENMU's Kyle Lantz followed suit with another three-pointer on the Greyhound's next possession. His shot from downtown pulled ENMU to within a point of the Texans, 22-21, but Tarleton closed out the half with a 4-0 run to take a five-point lead into the break.
The Texans opened the second half with a 10-2 run to push its lead to 38-23 with just a little over 15 minutes left to play in regulation. Tarleton's defense held ENMU to just a pair of field goals over the first 7:45.
ENMU came storming back though and at the 15:01 mark, Blackmon hit a three-pointer that propelled the Greyhounds to go on a 22-7 run. Greg McFarland poured in a lay-up at the 6:38 mark and ENMU erased a 15-point deficit to tie the game at 45-45.
Tarleton picked up a swing of momentum following a block from
Jon Cathey-Macklin (F, Jr, Milwaukee, Wis.) at the 4:54 mark and
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) nailed a three-pointer at the other end of the court to give the Texans back the lead at 48-45 with 4:24 left to play in the contest.
After pushing its lead to 50-45 on a bucket from Carter, ENMU went on a 6-1 run to tie the game at 51-51 with just over two minutes left to play. Carter got a dunk with 1:53 left on the clock to give Tarleton a two-point lead, but ENMU's Lawrence Domingo hit a shot from downtown to give the Geyhounds a 54-53 advantage with 1:34 left to play.
ENMU had a chance to add to its lead with a pair of free throws from Jordan Romero, but he missed both attempts and Tarleton hurried down the other end of the court only to have the ball turned back over to the home team.
Love then put in a lay-up with 44 seconds showing on the clock and ENMU pushed its lead to three points, 56-53. Furst was fouled at the other end of the court with 28.2 seconds left and both his feet were behind the arc giving the junior three chances at the charity stripe.
Furst sank all three attempts from the free throw line to tie the game at 56-56 and ENMU immediately called a timeout to draw-up a play and take the final shot of the contest. The Greyhounds used up all but 2.2 seconds left on the clock and when the clock stopped, Blackmon's three-pointer from the left wing was good giving the Greyhounds a 59-56 lead.
The Texans put up a desperation half-court shot, but it was off the mark and ENMU picked up its first win over the Texans since 2007 and snapping a 10-game win streak for Tarleton.
The Texans finished shooting 43.6 percent from the field, while ENMU shot 43.1 percent. The difference in the game was ENMU going 12-for-26 from beyond the arc and shooting 46.2 percent from downtown on the night.
Furst led the Texans with 16 points and Carter followed with 14 points. Blackmon led all players with 20 points in the contest as he went 5-for-11 from three-point land.
The Texans return to action this Saturday Jan. 19, hosting the West Texas A&M Buffs at Wisdom Gym. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Stephenville.
