Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The No. 24 Tarleton State Texans won its fourth straight game to open the 2013-14 season with a 107-54 victory over Arlington Baptist at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville on Tuesday.
The Texans (4-0) have now scored at least 85 points in four consecutive games for the just the second time in school history and for the first time since the 1989-90 season.
Tarleton has scored 100 points or more in two of its first four contests and are currently leading the Lone Star Conference with 101.2 points per game. The Texans also led the league in scoring-defense heading into tonight's game and are giving up just 60.2 points to opposing teams on the season after limiting the Patriots (0-5) to just 54 points on the night.
The Texans shot 54.3 percent from the field in the first half on the way to a 31-point halftime lead. Tarleton jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Patriots scored its first point with a free throw at the 15:43 mark of the first half. ABC did not score its first field goal until 13:50 remaining and at that time Tarleton's lead had grown to 17-3.
Up 24-10 with 9:54 left to play in the first half, Tarleton's
Chuck Guy hit a three-pointer to put the Texans up by 17 points and help start a 14-0 run. The Patriots, whose previous bucket came at the 9:54 mark, did not score again until there was 3:28 left to play before the break.
Guy was 4-for-4 from the field in the first half, which included the senior guard going 3-for-3 from downtown. He led all players at the break with 11 points and fellow senior De'Andre Upchurch followed with 10 points as the team headed into the locker room.
Thanks to Tarleton's stifling defense over the first 20 minutes, the Patriots were limited to just 8-of-30 (.267) shooting, which included going just 1-for-9 from three-point range. The Texans tallied six blocks in the first half alone and forced a pair of shot-clock violations.
Tarleton had just four turnovers in the first half and forced 10 Patriot turnovers en route to 14 points off those miscues. Tarleton led the contest at the break with 17 fast break points, while ABC scored zero.
The Texans opened the second half with a 20-4 run before the Patriots began to shoot the three-ball throughout the majority of the final second half of play. Arlington Baptist did manage to make four more three-pointers in the second half then they did the entire first half, but finished the game shooting just 22.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Tarleton eclipsed the 85-point mark on another three-pointer from Guy with 7:27 left to play and then broke the 100-point barrier with a pair of free throws from Mohammed Lee with just a little over a minute and a half to play in the game.
The Texans have now won 11 consecutive games at home against all opponents and 11 straight games home games against non-conference foes dating back to last season.
Guy finished with 21 points to give him three straight games with 20 points or more. He dished out five assists in the contest as well and had just two turnovers in 23 minutes of playing time.
Upchurch had 18 points and Lee followed with 16 points off the bench for the Texans.
Emmanuel Andrews poured in a career-high 15 points on the night as Tarleton's bench outscored the Patriots entire line-up with 58 points.
Davene Carter led the Texans defensively with 10 boards and
Jon Cathey-Macklin had a season-high four blocks in the win.
Tarleton finished shooting 55.4 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from downtown, while the defense limited the opposition to just 32.3 percent shooting from the floor. The Texans had a season-high 16 steals and forced 21 turnovers in which they turned into 31 points in the game.
The Texans out-rebounded the Patriots 51-34 in the game, giving Tarleton 50 or more rebounds in two of its first four games on the year.
After playing three games in the last five days, Tarleton will have three days to prepare before its next game when they host Lubbock Christian in non-conference action this Saturday, Nov. 23 at Wisdom Gym. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Stephenville.
