Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Tarleton State offense generated 618 yards of total offense and defensively
Marquis Wadley registered a career-high 18 tackles while guiding the Texans to a 49-32 non-conference victory over Southwestern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Tarleton Memorial Stadium in Stephenville.
Jake Fenske accounted for 424 of those yards on offense after completing 30 of his 44 passes and tying a career-high with five touchdown passes.
Bubba Tandy was on the receiving end of two of Fenske's TD passes and recorded a career-high 129 receiving yards in the process as well.
Tarleton's 618 offensive-yards outburst came just 30 yards shy of tying the school record of 648 yards that was set against Angelo State back on Nov. 2, 1996.
Defensively the Texans were all over the field on Saturday with Wadley registering his career-high in tackles, as did
Marc Martinez who set a career-high with 17 total tackles on the day as well.
SWOSU managed to make it a close game midway through the second quarter, pulling within two points of the Texans, but a 14-0 run to begin the third quarter is all that Tarleton needed in order to give head coach
Cary Fowler his season-high seventh win of the season.
The Texans moved to 7-2 overall, while the Bulldogs fell to .500 on the season at 5-5 overall. Saturday's win marks the seventh consecutive victory over the Bulldogs as well with the Texans pushing its record to 15-10 overall against SWOSU.
Tandy helped put the Texans on the scoreboard first with a 73-yard touchdown reception from
Jake Fenske with 09:00 left to play in the first quarter. Fenske would then later find Zach Henashaw on a screen pass for a 62-yard touchdown reception and the Texans extended its lead to 14-0 with 03:00 left in the first quarter.
SWOSU countered on its next possession with a 62-yard touchdown pass of its own as Dustin Stenta found M.J. Porter and pull the Bulldogs within seven points, down 14-7 with 02:05 left in the quarter.
Trent Gow scored his first career touchdown for the Texans on a six-yard pass from Fenske at the 09:19 mark of the second quarter that extended Tarleton's lead to 21-7, but the Bulldogs came right back with a nine-yard touchdown run from Stenta on SWOSU's next possession. The snap on the point-after-attempt was botched and the Bulldogs just fell on the ball, resulting in a 21-13 score in favor of the Texans with 06:35 left to play in the first half.
SWOSU managed to forced a fumble on Tarleton's next drive and Matt Farris later punched it in for the Bulldogs to make it a 21-19 game with 03:00 left in the second quarter. Farris attempted a rush for the PAT, but it was no good and the Texans took the two-point lead into halftime.
The Texans came right out of the intermission and found the end zone on
Jerome Regal's 39-yard scamper that capped off a seven-play, 74-yard drive and extend Tarleton's lead to 28-19 with 12:22 left to play in the third quarter.
Following a SWOSU punt, Fenske would drive the Texans down the field and later find Tandy for his second touchdown of the day to extend Tarleton's lead to 35-19 with a little over seven minutes left to play in the second quarter.
The Texans attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but SWOSU recovered on the Tarleton side of the 50-yard line and five plays later Karl Hodge punched it in from 10 yards out with 5:35 left to play in the third quarter to pull the Bulldogs within nine points down 35-26.
Tarleton added to its lead with 14:51 remaining in the game when Fenske found
Darren Wicker on a 32-yard screen pass for his first career touchdown and a 42-26 lead for the Texans.
Adding to a day-of-firsts for the Texans,
Collin Strahan tossed his first career touchdown with 10:57 left to play in the fourth quarter when he found
Tyler Wright for his first touchdown reception of his career. Following the PAT from
Blake Barnes, Tarleton led 49-26.
The Bulldogs managed to find the end zone one more time with 08:37 left to play in the fourth quarter when Stenta found Teverick Boyd from 15 yards out to make it a 49-32 game.
The Texans rushed for 164 yards on the day and Regal led the ground attack with his 81 yards on just eight carries. Despite playing just half of the fourth quarter, Strahan managed to net 39 yards on the ground on his four carries in the ballgame.
Henshaw finished the game with 25 yards rushing and 86 yards receiving to give him over 100 all-purpose yards for the fourth straight game.
Fenske and Strahan combined to pass for 454 yards and six touchdowns in the game. Fenske's 424 yards are the second-most of his career behind his 460-yard school record breaking performance against Angelo State last season.
The Texans recorded a season-high three sacks in the game with
Ethan Perkins taking down the quarterback twice on the day and
Justin Rayside collecting the other sack.
The Texans will host its final game of the 2013 regular-season next Saturday, Nov. 16 as Gulf South Conference member North Alabama comes into town. It will be another day game affair for the Texans with a kickoff set for 2 p.m. in Stephenville.
