Baseball Preview: at Southeastern Oklahoma

ON DECK
Tarleton baseball looks to extend its current three-game win streak as they head to Durant, Okla., to face the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm in a doubleheader this Tuesday, Feb. 26... First pitch of the twin bill is set for noon with the nightcap to follow approximately 20-30 afterwards.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE TEXANS
• The Texans earned a series sweep over Arlington Baptist this weekend, downing the Patriots 11-3 on Friday, and then defeating the visiting squad 19-3 and 9-0 in Saturday's twin bill at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville
• Two of three Tarleton starters on the weekend picked up wins in their efforts on the mound. Miguel Ramirez (1-0) won his first game in over two years since returning to the Texans following an arm injury sidelined him in March of 2011. Matt Buckmaster (2-1) tossed a four hit, complete game shutout on Saturday as he picked up the win for the Texans as well. Friday's starter, Pete Perez (ND), got the no decision as he allowed three runs on 10 hits, while striking out five.
Ryan Small led the Texans at the plate this weekend, going 9-for-12 with four doubles. He drove in seven runs and scored a team-high five runs as well.
Alvaro Moreno hit .500 over the two-day span, collecting seven hits in 14 trips to the plate.
Fola Lajide had four hits on the weekend, with all four hits going for extra bases (three doubles, one triple).

TEXANS AT THE PLATE
• Moreno leads the team with 16 hits and a .372 batting average.
• Small leads the team and is tied for first place in the Lone Star Conference with seven doubles.
Colten Boothe and Moreno are tied for the team lead with a .488 slugging percentage.
• The Texans are hitting .285 as a team, which ranks sixth in the LSC.

TEXANS ON THE MOUND
• Buckmaster leads the team and is the top pitcher in the conference with a 0.00 earned run average. He has 24 strikeouts in 23.2 innings of work, which ranks fourth in the LSC.
• Ramirez has recorded 19 strikeouts in just 17 full innings of work this season.
• Tarleton's pitching staff leads the conference with a combined 2.09 ERA.

ABOUT THE SAVAGE STORM
• Southeastern Oklahoma head coach Mike Metheny is in his 33rd season with the Savage Storm. He brings in a career record of 1,219-565-2 into Tuesday's match-up.
• SOSU is coming off a 6-5 win over Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark., this past weekend. The Savage Storm however lost the series to the Tigers 2-1.
• SOSU is 5-6 overall on the season, which includes a 2-2 mark in games played at The Ballpark in Durant. The Savage Storm went 21-9 in home games last season.
• The Savage Storm is now a member of the Great American Conference and the team currently has a 2-2 mark in league play as they head into non-conference action with the Texans on Tuesday.
• Ryan Salter leads SOSU in hitting as he averages .318 at the plate. He is 14-for-44 at the dish this season with a pair of doubles. He leads the team with eight runs scored and he is a threat on the base paths as well, having stole 10 bases in 11 attempts.
• Evan Ramsey follows with a .290 batting average, but leads the team with a triple and two home runs. His 10 runs batted in are a team high also.
• Cameron Mann and Evan Rice are each 1-0 for the Savage Storm. Mann has a 2.51 earned run average and has a team-high two saves on the season. Rice has a 5.73 ERA and has a complete game on the year. Brandon Morris is 0-2 for the season, but he leads the team with 20 strikeouts.
• Overall, the Savage Storm is hitting .281, which ranks last in the GAC. But, the pitching staff has a combined 3.84 ERA on the season and that ranks third in the league.

SERIES NOTES
• The Savage Storm leads the all-time series 27-15, but the Texans are 7-6 against SOSU playing under Tarleton head coach Bryan Conger.
• Tarleton won the last meeting between the two teams, a 4-3 decision over the Savage Storm back on Mar. 12, 2011 in Durant, Okla.
• The Texans and Savage Strom split the past two series played at The Ballpark in Durant, with SOSU taking the series in 2011 (2-1) and Tarleton picking up the series win back in 2009 (3-1). SOSU won the last series played in Stephenville, 3-1 during the 2010 campaign.

WEEKEND WARRIORS
• What a difference one weekend makes, as Tarleton's offense lit up the Arlington Baptist pitching staff for a total of 39 runs on 44 hits. 20 of those hits came for extra bases in the three-game set.
• Tarleton raised its batting average .057 points with its offensive barrage against the Patriots. The Texans came into the weekend batting just .228 as a team, but with it's .419 average this past weekend, Tarleton is now hitting .285 as a team.

GOIN' YARD
• Tarleton's Colten Boothe hit the team's first home run of the season at home and the second home run of the season.
Alvaro Moreno was the first Texan to go yard this season, hitting a dinger into the left field seats at Houston's Minute Maid Park against Arkansas Tech.

UP NEXT
• Tarleton will remains on the road this week as the team travels to Abilene to participate in the Whitten Inn Classic, hosted by Abilene Christian. The tournament will run Thursday, Feb. 29 through Sunday, Mar. 3. Tarleton will open the tournament against ACU on Thursday with a first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field.
