Texans hit 13 three-pointers in 75-70 overtime win over Wildcats

Coleman Furst scored 19 points and was 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point line for the Texans on Saturday.
Box Score ABILENE, Texas – The Tarleton Texans and Abilene Christian Wildcats combined to make 24 three-pointers, but it was Tarleton's 13 shots made from beyond the arc that sealed a 75-70 overtime victory over the hosting Wildcats at Moody Coliseum Saturday night in Abilene.

Three players – Chuck Guy, Coleman Furst, and De'Andre Upchurch – all scored 19 points in the game for the Texans as they combined to go 19-for-37 from the field.

The Texans (14-6, 7-5 LSC) have now won a season-high six consecutive games, and pushed its winning streak to nine straight games over the Wildcats (11-11, 5-9 LSC) in the process.

ACU went on an 11-2 run to end the first half, taking a 31-23 lead into the break. The Texans went just 3-for-10 from the field down the stretch, while the Wildcats went 7-for-10 in its last 10 shots from the field.

Five of Tarleton's nine first half field goals did come from behind the arc though. The Texans fell behind early 7-2 and then following a dunk from Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) Tarleton made its next five shots from downtown.

The Texans shot 40.9 percent from the floor in the first half, but unlike the first time these two teams met – ACU shot 46.4 percent from the field in the first half to tonight's game. The Wildcats went 4-for-6 from the arc and were a combined 13-for28 from the field.

ACU's Elliott Lloyd led all players at the break with eight points. He opened the game scoring the first six points of the contest with a pair of three-pointers that gave ACU an early 6-0 lead.

The Texans pulled within five points of the Wildcats, down 36-31 following a turn-around jumper from Jon Cathey-Macklin (F, Jr, Milwaukee, Wis.) at the 15:06 mark, but ACU went on a 7-2 run and extended its lead to 43-33.

Tarleton came right back with an 8-0 run and pulled within two points of ACU, 43-41. ACU's Eric Lawton ended the run with a three-pointer at the 9:02 mark and it ended a field goal drought for the Wildcats as well – a drought that last more than 4:30.

Furst (G, Jr, Denison) countered with a three-pointer at the other end of the court, but Lawton again nailed a trey to push ACU's lead to 49-44 with less than nine minutes to play.

At one point late in the half, ACU made four three-pointers, but Tarleton remained in the game with a couple of three-pointers and then going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Before the final media timeout, ACU's lead was just 55-53 with less than four minutes to play.

Up 56-53 with less than three minutes to play, Lawton was fouled shooting a three-pointer, but he made just two of his shots from the charity stripe and Guy tied the game at the other end of the floor with his three-pointer at the 2:19 mark.

ACU's Cornelius Cammock stepped out of bounds on the baseline, turning over the ball to the Texans with 1:57 left to play. De'Andre Upchurch then gave Tarleton its first lead at the 1:42 mark with a three-pointer from the right wing.

Tarleton went up 61-58, but Lawton answered at the other end with a three-pointer for the Wildcats, tying the game at 61-61.

ACU managed to get the ball with about 45 seconds left on the clock, but passed the ball out of bounds under Tarleton's basket with 42.1 seconds remaining in the contest. Out of the timeout, Furst hit a jumper from the left elbow to give Tarleton a 63-61 lead with 27 seconds remaining in the game.

That left enough time on the clock for ACU to have the final possession of the second half, but Steven Werner was left all alone under the basket with 15 seconds left on the clock and he dunked the ball to tie the game at 63-63.

This would give Tarleton 15 seconds for one final play in regulation, but Guy's jumper from 10 feet away clanked off the front end of the rim to send the game into overtime.

This was the first overtime contest for Tarleton since falling to Arkansas Tech in the semifinals of the South Central regional last season. ACU's last overtime contest came on Jan. 11 of last season when they fell to A&M-Commerce on the road.

Guy would score the first points of the overtime period, a three-pointer from Guy at the 3:30 mark. His shot came nearly eight feet behind the arc, but the ball barely nicked iron on the way to falling in for a 66-63 lead. Following a failed dunk attempt from Werner at the other end of the floor, Guy came right back with a jumper to give Tarleton a five-point lead with just over 2:30 to play.

ACU lot a layup from Werner to pull within three points of the Texans, but Tarleton came right back with an alley-oop dunk from Guy to Carter making it a 70-68 game. The Wildcats made it a two-point game just a few seconds later as Lawton connected on his sixth three-pointer of the game making it a 70-68 game with 1:35 to play.

Furst drained the game's 24th three-pointer at the 1:05 mark of overtime to give Tarleton a 73-68 lead, and despite ACU countering with a layup at the other end, the Texans made it a five-point game with 16.27 seconds left to play on Upchurch's fade-away jumper.

Lawton's three-point attempt with eight seconds left to play was off the mark and Cathey-Macklin pulled down the rebound and secured the possession by immediately calling a timeout.

Tarleton was fouled on the in-bounds pass and missed the first free throw, but it was over when ACU put up the final three-pointer. The ball came off the rim and the horn sounded giving Tarleton the win.

“We made some adjustments at halftime and this team just never quit,” Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman said. “These guys have been working so hard in practice lately. They know that defense is what it is all about and they showed that in the final moments of the game and into overtime.”

Guy matched his season-high with eight assists and had just one turnover in 41 minutes on the court. Damion Clemons (F, So, Dallas) had a team-high three blocks and Cathey-Macklin led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.

ACU's Lawton led all scorers with 20 points and Dosh Simms led the game with 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.

Tarleton finished shooting 46.6 percent from the field, which included going 13-for-26 from beyond the arc. The Texans scored 15 points off turnovers as well, forcing ACU to 10 turnovers. Tarleton had just six turnovers in the game.

The Texans return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 13, with a road contest against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. in Kingsville.
