Box Score CANYON, Texas – The Tarleton Texans dropped its regular-season finale game at West Texas A&M on Saturday, falling 58-55 to the Buffs at First United Bank Center in Canyon.
The Texans took a 20-19 lead into the locker room at halftime and
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) leading the way with nine points at the break.
Tarleton shot just 38.9 percent from the field, but held the Buffs to just 32.0 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Tarleton out-rebounded WT 16-15 in the first half, but gave up two more turnovers than the home team (9-7).
Tarleton opened the second half with a 10-6 run and extend its lead to 30-25 with less than 16 minutes to play, but WT came back with its own 9-2 run and led 34-32 at the 10:57 mark when Kennon Washington made one of two attempts from the free throw line.
The Texans held WT scoreless over the next two and a half minutes while going on a 7-0 run to take back the lead 39-34. The Buffs did not score a field goal for five in a half minutes until Donald Sims poured in a jumper off the backboard with 6:46 left to play, making it a 43-38 game at the time.
The Buffs used a 14-4 run over the next six-plus minutes to take back the lead and then extend its point margin to 52-47 before Guy poured in a layup with 33 seconds left to play and Tarleton was forced to foul down the stretch.
Tarleton managed to score every time it got the ball back over the final 30 seconds, but WT went 6-for-10 from the charity stripe over that span and pulled down two important offensive rebounds.
WT's Tez Dumars made his first attempt from the charity stripe with four seconds left in the game, but he missed the last attempt and got the offensive rebound and time expired giving WT the win at home, 58-55.
Guy finished the game with a career-high 27 points in the losing effort.
Coleman Furst (G, Jr, Denison) followed with nine points for the Texans.
The Buffs had three players score in double-figures and were led by Kennon Washington and Mason White's 17 points each.
Tarleton shot 48.9 percent from the field and limited WT to just 38.8 percent, but the Buffs made up the difference going 19-for-29 from the free throw line.
The loss drops the Texans to 17-9 overall and 10-8 in Lone Star Conference play. WT moved to 17-9 overall as well and are 9-9 in league play.
Tarleton had already wrapped up the No. 3 seed in next week's LSC Championship Tournament and will face the No. 6 six seed, which had yet to be determined at the time of this release.
The Texans and No. 6 seed will play on Thursday, Mar. 7 at 2:30 p.m. inside the Allen Event Center in Allen.
