Reisman Claims 550th Career Win as Texans Down Rams 72-64

Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas – The fourth-ranked Tarleton State Texans downed the Angelo State Rams on the road 72-64 to earn the team's 20th win of the season and help give head coach Lonn Reisman his 550th career win with the Texans.
 
The Texans are now 20-1 overall and improved to 9-1 in the Lone Star Conference, while the Rams fall to 16-6 overall and 6-4 in league play.
 
The 20th win marks the 15th 20-win season for Reisman overall and the fifth straight. The head coach is now 550-227 overall in 26 seasons at Tarleton.
 
"I am not into the stats, but it is an honor to achieve this remarkable win tonight," said Reisman. "I have to give all of the credit to my great assistant coaches that I have had over the years. [Associate head coach] Chris [Reisman] has been a tremendous part of this record and he has helped me to so many of these wins, as have the many great assistants that I have had."
 
The Texans led by as many as 13 points at the 6:00 mark after taking a 27-14 lead on a three-pointer from Tashawn Mabry. ASU came back with a 7-0 run and pulled within six points of the Texans before #De'Andre Upchurch stopped the run with a jumper to make it 29-21 with 3:43 remaining in the half.
 
The Rams would close out the remainder of the half on a 7-1 run, but Tarleton still managed to take a two-point lead into the break, up 30-28 as both teams headed into the locker room.
 
Tarleton shot 40.6 percent from the field, but were just 2-of-13 from downtown, while ASU shot 33.3 percent from the field and 20.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Rams made up most of the difference at the charity stripe where they went 11-for-12 for a 91.7 percent effort and the Texans made just two of its seven attempts over the first 20 minutes.
 
The Rams and Texans each tallied 20 rebounds in the first half and Tarleton poured in nine second-chance points off of eight offensive boards as well. Tarleton did force eight turnovers in the first half as well, while turning those miscues into 11 points.
 
Upchurch led all players at the break with nine points and ASU's Bryan Hammond led the Rams with seven points.
 
ASU's leading scorer on the season Kenny Williams, who was held to just five points in the first half, opened the second half with a bucket form the lane to five the Rams its first tie of the contest, but Davene Carter came right back with a dunk on the other end to give Tarleton back the lead.
 
Carter's dunk would propel the Texans on a 9-0 run and after ASU scored six of the game's next eight points to make it a 1-36 game, Tarleton went on another 9-0 to extend its lead to 50-36 with just over 11 minutes to play in the game.
 
ASU stopped the run with a mini 4-0 run but back-to-back buckets from Carter pushed Tarleton's lead back to 15 points, up 54-39. Then after leading 55-41, the Rams went on a 9-0 run of their own to pull within five points, down 55-50.
 
The run forced Reisman to take a timeout and out of the stoppage in play, Upchurch poured in a lay-up to make it a 57-50 game and put a halt to Tarleton's scoring drought.
 
The two teams would trade baskets until the 43 second mark when ASU was forced to start fouling the visiting Texans, but with its first foul, Upchurch went to the line where he made both free throws to five the Texans a seven-point advantage, 67-60.
 
ASU would come up empty on its next possession and Guy was fouled with 32.2 seconds left to play. Guy drained both of them and Tarleton was up by nine points. ASU's Hammond did manage to hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to play, but Guy was again fouled on the in-bounds pass.
 
Guy sank both free throws again and ASU was fouled on the next possession with 19.1 seconds left to play. Hammond went to the line for the Rams, but he made just one of two to make it a 71-63 game. Upchurch was fouled again and went to the line where he made one of two to make it a 72-64 game.
 
ASU's three-pointer with 10.2 seconds left was off the mark and it went out of bounds. Tarleton in-bounded the ball and ran the clock out to give Reisman his 550th career-win with the Texans.
 
Upchurch paced the Texan offense with 19 points and after scoring just two points at the break, Guy came back to finish with 18 points for the Texans.
 
The Texans shot 46.9 percent from the field in the second half and finished shooting 43.8 percent in the game. Tarleton's defense limited the Rams to just 35.8 percent shooting, which included ASU going just 2-for-13 from beyond the arc.
 
The Texans had just two turnovers in the second half and finished the game with just seven, while forcing 14 ASU turnovers in the contest.
 
The Texans will return home for its next contest to host Texas A&M-Kingsville in a contest that will be aired live on CSN Houston. Tip-off between the Texans and Javelinas is set for 7:05 Saturday at Wisdom Gym.
