Box Score STEPHENVILLE – The No. 4-ranked Tarleton State Texans shot a season-high 65.4 percent from the field on its way to a 94-58 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Kingsville before a sold out crowd Saturday night at Wisdom Gym.
With lights and cameras all over Wisdom Gym Saturday night for the nationally televised broadcast from CSN Houston, none of that seemed to faze the Texans (21-1, 10-1 LSC) after going 34-for-52 from the floor with an 11-for-16 effort from beyond the arc.
The 65.4 percent is not only a season-high for the Texans, but it marks the highest field goal percentage from a Texan team since knocking down 69.2 percent against Hillsdale Baptist well over 10 years ago, back on Dec. 15, 2003. It is the third-highest shooting percentage under a
Lonn Reisman-coached team.
Tarleton has now posted 60-percent or better shooting efforts in four games this season, with a two of those coming against the Javelinas. In two games against TAMUK this season, the Texans are averaging 98.5 points per game and are shooting a little over 63 percent from the field.
Chuck Guy scored 18 points and dished out a career-high 14 assists, while De'Andre Upchurch went 6-for-6 from the three-point line to finish with a team-high 21 points.
The scoring did not stop there for the Texans as
Davene Carter, who had multiple highlight dunks on the evening, poured in 11 points for the Purple and White, while
Tashawn Mabry added 13 points off the bench.
The Javelinas (8-15, 3-8 LSC) managed to shoot 42.9 percent from the field in the first half, but the Texan defense put the clamps on in the second half as they limited the visiting squad to just a 34.5 percent effort in the second half, which included them only going 1-for-11 from the arc in the final 20 minutes.
TAMUK finished shooting 38.0 percent from the field and after making just four of its 18 attempts from downtown, the Javelinas shot just 22.2 percent from the arc.
TAMUK's Ronald Scott led the Javelinas with a game-high 23 points, but Tarleton's bench-play made up the difference – outscoring the TAMUK bench, 37-11.
Tarleton beat the visiting team in almost every aspect of the game as they out-rebounded the Javelinas 30-26 and yielded just seven turnovers to TAMUK's 13. The Texans scored 24 points off those miscues and tallied 34 points in the paint, compared with the Javelinas who scored just 16 points inside the lane.
After taking a 41-28 lead into the break at halftime, Tarleton outscored the Javelinas 14-6 over the first 3:30 of the second half and later went on a 14-0 run to push its lead to as many as 33-points when Tarleton extended its lead to 71-38 with 11:17 left to play.
The Texans would lead by as many as 37 points with a little over a minute and a half left to play before closing out the contest with an old-fashioned three-point play from
Michael Hardge and secure the 36-point victory.
The Texans have now scored 75-points or more in 21 of its 22 games this season and have tallied at least 90 points or more in seven games on the year.
Tarleton will close out its two-game home stand on Wednesday as the Texans welcome West Texas A&M to Wisdom Gym this Wednesday, Feb. 22. Tip-off between the Texans and Buffs is set for 8 p.m.
