Tarleton called a timeout with 22 seconds left in regulation to set up the final shot, but a lay-up attempt from De'Andre Upchurch was off the mark and the horn sounded sending the game into overtime.
It was Tarleton's first overtime game of the season and first since playing Abilene Christian in an extra period back on Feb. 9 of last season. It also marked the first time that a Texan team had taken a game into overtime inside Wisdom Gym since a 76-74 overtime victory against West Texas A&M back on Jan. 26, 2008.
MSU's Eddie D'Haiti opened the overtime period with a lay-up to give the Mustangs a quick 67-65 lead, but Guy countered with a lay-up at the other end of the floor to tie the game 67-67 with 4:35 left to play. The same two players again poured in lay-ups for both teams and the game was knotted up at 69-69 with 3:46 remaining.
Cam Adderly put the Mustangs back on top by two points with a pair of free throws, but Tarleton came right back with a bucket from
Davene Carter to tie the game again at 71-71. Monzaigo Williams hit a lay-up with 2:59 left to play before Upchurch could follow with a lay-up of his own at the 2:45 mark.
MSU's ensuing possession saw Plummer try a three-pointer from the corner, but
Michael Hardge blocked the shot only to see MSU get the rebound. Adderly then made his lay-up to put the Mustangs back on top 75-73, but Carter countered with his own lay-up to tie the game 75-75 with 2:02 left in the contest.
MSU missed its next two field goal attempts, giving the Texans a chance to take the lead, but Guy's three-pointer was off the mark and Williams pulled down the rebound and called a timeout after sprinting past the timeline with 25 seconds left to play.
Out of the timeout, Williams knocked down a jumper with four seconds left and Tarleton took its final timeout to draw up a play. Out of the timeout though, Tarleton's heave just after midcourt was off the mark and MSU escaped Wisdom Gym with its first win in Stephenville since Feb. 3, 2010.
