Texans Escape Aggie Gym with 75-74 Overtime Win

Box Score LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton State's De'Andre Upchurch scored a game-high 24 points and Tashawn Mabry added a career-high 22 points to help guide the second-ranked Texans to a 75-74 overtime win over the Cameron Aggies Saturday afternoon in Lawton, Okla.

Both Upchurch and Mabry combined to score seven of Tarleton's 12 overtime points as the Texans (19-1, 8-1 LSC) managed to overcome not only Wednesday's loss, but an eight-point second half deficit as well.

Tarleton trailed the Aggies (9-11, 3-6 LSC) 59-51 with 6:33 left to play in regulation before Mabry opened a 7-0 run with a lay-up and Upchurch closing it out with a three-pointer at the 4:57 mark.

The Texans later found themselves down 60-58 with 4:24 left to play, but neither team managed to score over the next 2:59 until Cameron's Craig Foster went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to push the Aggie lead to 61-58 at the 1:25 mark.

#Chuck Guy poured in a lay-up to pull the Texans within a point and Upchurch gave them the lead on a lay-up with just 19 seconds left to play. Upchurch, gave Tarleton a two-point lead following his conversion of an old-fashioned three-point play, but Foster came right back to tie the score at 63-63 with a pair of free throws at the other end, which helped send the contest into overtime – Tarleton's second straight overtime contest in the matter of four days.

Mabry opened the overtime period with a jumper to give the Texans a lead, but CU came right back with a pair of free throws from Will Cook. Davene Carter made one of his two free throw attempts to give the Texans back the lead , but again, Cook was perfect in converting his two free throws to give CU a 67-66 lead.

Mabry added a pair of free throws with 3:36 left to play and CU came right back with a lay-up from Sean McGary that took 34 seconds off the clock.

Two minutes would go by without either team making a basket until Mohammed Lee knocked down a jumper at the 1:02 mark to give Tarleton a one-point advantage, 70-69. Lee was fouled on the play and he converted the three-point play to give the Texans a two-point lead.

Cook drained a three-pointer at the other end of the court, but Upchurch returned the favor with a trey of his own – his fifth three-pointer of the game – to give the Texans a two-point lead, up 74-72.

Jon Cathey-Macklin recorded a block on CU's next possession, but the ball sailed out of bounds, giving the Aggies another chance with 42 seconds left to play. Out of the in-bounds pass, Tank Mayberry poured in a lay-up to tie the game at 74-74 Tarleton took over with just 38 seconds remaining in the game

Guy missed a lay-up on Tarleton's next possession, but Foster was called for an offensive foul that sent Guy to the free throw line. Guy missed his first free throw attempt, but made his second one to give Tarleton the 75-74 lead, which was more than enough as CU's last ditch effort fell short.

The Texans, who played in back-to-back overtimes for the first time since the 2006-07 season, have won two of its past three overtime contests and three of its past five dating back to 2009-10.

The Texans finished the game shooting 44.4 percent from the field and after shooting less than 62 percent from the free throw line in Wednesday's defeat, Tarleton came back to shoot 70 percent from the charity stripe inside Aggie Gym on Saturday.

The Aggies shot 50 percent from the field and were 40 percent from beyond the arc, but Tarleton's 10 points off turnovers made up the difference in the game.

The Texans will remain on the road for its next contest as the team travels to San Angelo to face the Angelo State Rams this Wednesday, Feb. 12. Tip-off between the two teams is scheduled for 8 p.m. inside the Junell Center.
