Chase Rathke in the mile and Euphemia Edem in the triple jump were the highlights of day two, but I feel really good about the men's mile relay and the way they competed today as well. Hopefully we'll see some improvements before the next meet at Texas Tech on February 20th."
Sprints and Hurdles
In the first event of the day, it was DeAijha Hicks-Boyce making noise in the 200m with a 10th-place finish crossing the line in 25.93 breaking the school record of 26.17 previously held by teammate
Deylinn Garrett.
In the 400m
Jasmine Owens,
Marquis Thompson and
Cameron Krc all had strong showings finishing ninth (1:00.26), fifth (50.53) and eighth (50.71), respectively.
Distance and Relays
Day-two distance races saw five athletes finish in the top-10. Freshman Makinsey Beesley finished 10th in the mile run clocking 5:50.85 over the distance while
Tylo Farrar finished eighth in the 3000m needing only 10:51.09 to complete the race.
The men's mile featured defending outdoor 1500m champion
Chase Rathke demolishing the school record, previously held by
Dylan Willett, by 10.70 seconds in a first-place NCAA provisional 4:08.27 performance. Rathke is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the mile behind MSU-Billings Robert Peterson, who completed the race .77 seconds faster than Rathke earlier today at the Montana State Open.
Stefan Campos also competed in the mile turning in a ninth-place finish in the mile of 4:40.04. Freshman Peyton Heinig ran 9:04.91 to finish 10th in the 3000m.
The 4x400m relay saw two Tarleton teams compete for top-ten finishes. The women's 4x400 "A" team (DeAijha Hicks-Boyce,
Shelby Greenwalt, Leslie Zupanic,
Jasmine Owens) ran to the tune of 4:05.17 finishing 10th.
For the men, the "A" 4x400m relay (
Cameron Krc,
Phillip Hayes,
Blake Eschbach,
Marquis Thompson) battled it out with Lone Star Conference rival West Texas A&M on the anchor leg to win the heat and finish fifth overall taking the baton the distance in 3:21.97.
Jumps and Throws
The woman's high jump saw three freshmen with top-10 performances in their first collegiate meet. Morgan McKee took second in the high jump clearing an NCAA provisional 1.66m (5-5.25) while Mikala Booher and Roxana Hernandez tied for sixth with a best jump of 1.61m(5-3.25).
Euphemia Edem, who set a new school record yesterday in the long jump, set the school record today in the triple jump finishing first in an astounding 12.66m (41-6.50), once again hitting an NCAA automatic mark. Andrea Ibe jumped 10.45m (34-3.50) to take a 10th-place finish in the triple jump. Jacobe Essary took fourth in the triple jump for the Texans at 13.29m (43-7.25) and teammate
Henry Brown took seventh in 12.87m (42-2.75).
Euphemia Edem is the first athlete in Tarleton history to qualify for the NCAA championships with automatic qualifying marks in two events in the first meet of the season. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the triple jump and No. 5 in the nation in the long jump.
Brianna Johnson, school record holder in the hammer throw, finished seventh in the event with a 14.32m (46-11.75). For the men,
Kenny Odunaiya finished first in the hammer throw with a toss of 16.38m(53-9) while
Zach Pratt finished ninth with a best throw of 13.72m (45-0.25).
The two-day meet at Texas Tech saw six new indoor track and field school records set along with three provisional NCAA marks and two NCAA automatic marks. This is the most records broken in one meet for Tarleton under Ponder.
Tarleton will take a four-week hiatus before traveling to Alabama to compete in the Samford Elite Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex Track February 13th.
