Box Score: USWMIDLAND – Tarleton State Tennis returned to Stephenville after winning two of three make up games at a neutral court in Midland Sunday and Monday.
The TexAnns, who were supposed to play Western New Mexico at a tournament last week before weather rained on their parade, met the Mustangs in Midland – Sunday afternoon and wrapped up the trip with a doubleheader sweep of East Texas Baptist and the University of the Southwest.
"We really needed to get some matches in and it was good for us to get these," said head coach
Lance Drake. "Everyone has been struggling due to the weather and cancellations. I really think our match play improved over these matches."
Game 1: Western New Mexico 5, Tarleton 4
Tarleton opened play with a tough 4-5 loss to in-region foe Western New Mexico despite heading into singles action with a 2-1 lead.
Gabriella Jansson and
Ellie Stevens paired up in the No. 2 match to deliver an 8-5 win while
Erika Richarme and
Ariadna Cabezas-Marti and
Erika Richarme came out on top with an 8-6 win in the No. 3 match for Tarleton's two wins in doubles. Tarleton dropped the top match 5-8 to enter singles play.
In singles,
Ashleigh Elward won with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 singles match while
Luiza Ferraro-Adas pushed her team-leading singles record to 5-1 with a 7-5, 6-4 win in the No. 3 match. That would be all the Tarleton wins in singles play, however, as the TexAnns dropped the match with losses in No. 1, 4, 5 and 6.
"We knew this was going to be a close match," said Drake. "It was good to get the momentum after doubles, but WNMU came out and played inspired in singles. We had our chances, but they bettered us. On the plus side, however, we did improve in certain areas."
Game 2: Tarleton 9, East Texas Baptist 0
The TexAnns opened play Monday afternoon with their first sweep of the season – topping East Texas Baptist by a final score of 9-0, following a six-hour rain delay.
"East Texas Baptist is an up-and-coming program that is much stronger this year and will continue to improve," said Drake. "Coach Bramlett has done a good job with that program. I thought we played with good intensity and focus."
Tarleton opened the afternoon with a sweep of doubles action, beginning with an 8-0 sweep by Richarme and Cabezas-Marti in the No. 3 match. Ferraro-Adas and Elward teamed up for an 8-2 win in the top-seeded match while Jansson and Stevens won their third straight doubles match with an 8-5 win in the No. 2 spot.
The TexAnns dominated singles action, starting with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep by Adas in the No. 3 match. Elward (6-2, 6-1) and Richarme (6-3, 6-3) rounded out the top half of the lineup with wins while Stevens (6-0, 6-1), Jansson (6-1, 6-2) and Cabezas-Marti (6-1, 6-4) took care of business in the No. 4, 5 and 6 matches.
Game 3: Tarleton 9, University of the Southwest 0
Tarleton wrapped up the trip to Midland by earning six outright victories and three by forfeit to secure its second consecutive 9-0 sweep – this time over the University of the Southwest.
The game only needed six matches to secure the sweep as Tarleton earned one forfeit victory in doubles and a pair of victories via forfeit in singles play.
With the one doubles win secured before the match started, Jansson and Stevens handled the No. 1 match with an 8-2 win while Richarme and Cabezas-Marti improved their team-best record to 8-1 with an 8-0 sweep of the No. 2 match.
In singles play, Stevens and Jansson continued to shine by winning the No. 3 and 4 matches, respectively, with identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Elward took over the No. 1 match with a 6-4, 6-1 win while Ferraro-Adas won the No. 2 match 6-4, 6-0.
Tarleton will return to action on Saturday, March 28 in Stephenville when the TexAnns host Dallas Baptist at 1 p.m.
