Texans handle Arlington Baptist for first season-opening sweep since 2012

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton tossed its second connective shutout of Arlington Baptist before the big barrels took care of game three as the Texans swept Arlington Baptist Saturday for its first season-opening sweep since 2012.

"It was a really good opening weekend for us," said head coach Bryan Conger. "There were a lot of good things and there were some things we need to work on. There is a ton of room for this group to improve. The biggest challenge for us right now is showing up every single game and playing with intent in every single inning."

Game 1: Tarleton 3, Arlington Baptist 0

A trio of new arms combined to toss Tarleton's second consecutive shutout as the Texans improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 3-0 victory over the Patriots in the first of two games Saturday afternoon.

Evan Pontley earned the starting nod and tossed five innings of three-hit ball while striking out four to earn his first Tarleton win. Eli McLane pitched the sixth inning and worked around a walk before Eddie Avila closed things out with his first career save. Avila allowed one walk but struck out the side in his Tarleton debut.

The Texan offense gave Pontley an early run when Jose Reyes led off the third with a triple and later came in to score on a Blake Adams RBI single into right. Tarleton tacked on two more in the fifth when Austin Call wore a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to score Adams and Francisco Rodriguez came in on a wild pitch during the next at bat.

Adams, Reyes, and Ben Mauseth each had one hit in the game.

Game 2: Tarleton 13, Arlington Baptist

Tarleton came out swinging in the final game of the series as three moon-shot home runs, including two from Dylan Lemons, was more than enough to lift the Texans to a sweep of the Patriots.

The first run of the game came in the opening inning when a one-out error with the bases loaded allowed Adams and Jake Hasbrouck to come across. Garret Kizer drove in another with an RBI single for a quick 3-0 lead after one.

The sticks weren't done there.

Reyes and Adams started the second inning with singles before Francisco Rodriguez drove a 2-RBI triple into the right-center gap. Three batters later, Dylan Lemons unloaded for a monster three-run home run to left field – the first of his Tarleton career. Mauseth capped off the six-run inning with a two-out RBI triple for a 9-0 Tarleton lead.

A pair of two-run homers highlighted the third inning when Hasbrouck took one deep to the opposite field and Lemons followed up after an Austin Call walk with his second jack of the afternoon. It's the 68th time in Tarleton's modern history that a Texan has blasted two home runs in the same game.

Meanwhile, Conner Fletcher got the start and threw three scoreless innings to start before allowing three in the fourth while striking out nine. Chris Reed earned the win after pitching the fifth inning while Will Blanchard, Nathan Jackson, Colby Fowler, and Hunter Houston each tossed one inning of work. Fowler and Houston combined for five strikeouts in the six total outs they recorded.

Fletcher's first three innings of scoreless helped extend the Tarleton pitching staff's scoreless start to the season to 19.1 innings.

"Obviously, we didn't expect something like that right out of the gate because its everyone's first appearance," said Conger. "We expect them to attack the zone and we felt they did that really well this weekend. For the first time out, the pitching staff did a really good job with their routines and the things we asked them to do."

Adams went 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot while Lemons, Kizer, and Mauseth each had two hits. Rodriguez, Hasbrouck, Dalton Richardson, Luis Rivas, and Reyes each had one hit.

Tarleton will hit the road for San Antonio next weekend for a three-game series with St. Mary's, beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
