STEPHENVILLE – West Texas A&M put up six runs over the first two innings, which proved to be too much for the No. 15 Texans to overcome on a cold, rainy afternoon at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.
"Today we got beat. Peroid, plain and simple," said head coach
Bryan Conger. "We didn't meet the standard we have set for ourselves. We need to learn from it and come out tomorrow prepared to do whatever it takes."
The Buffs came out and put up a four spot in the opening frame and added two more in the second before Tarleton answered with an RBI double from
Ben Mauseth put Tarleton on the board.
Matt Herrick answered with a goose egg in the top of the third while the offense tacked on another run in the ensuing half inning with an RBI single from
Austin Call to bring the Texans back within four.
The teams stayed quite – except for a single WT run in the fourth – until Tarleton made some noise in the sixth.
A pair of errors on the shortstop allowed one run to come across and set up the Texans with runners on the corners for
Blake Adams, who drove in the second run of the inning when he and
Jose Reyes beat out a two-out fielder's choice that allowed
Ben Mauseth to cross the plate and bring Tarleton within three at 7-4.
Francisco Rodriguez reached on a catcher's interference to load the bases but a strikeout ended the Tarleton threat.
WT went on to add three more in the top of the ninth to pull away and bring the game to its final score.
Tarleton's offense mustered seven hits for the game, including five combined from
Austin Call and Mauseth. Call went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI while Mauseth was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Rodriguez and
Jose Reyes each had one to round out the offensive effort.
The Texans and Buffs will close out the series with a 1 p.m. game in Stephenville tomorrow afternoon.
