WEEK AT A GLANCE: Texan Basketball with big non-conference matchups, Football returns to Memorial Stadium to conclude season

Texan Basketball faces some true tests with great non-conference Division I competition throughout the week.

Women's Basketball gets things rolling this week with an early Tuesday matchup with SEC member Vanderbilt. They get a few days to rest and sharpen their skills before the College of Charleston comes to Wisdom Gym on Friday. Texan Men's Basketball gets to spend the later part of the week in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands, to compete in the Paradise Jam. Their first game will be against Belmont on Friday. Depending on the result of that game, they will play George Mason or Boston College on either Saturday or Sunday. Their final game of the Paradise Jam will be next Monday with their opponent TBA depending on the results of earlier games. Texan Football returns to Memorial Stadium to wrap up their 2022 season against Houston Christian on Saturday.

TARLETON MEN'S BASKETBALL gave the Arizona State Sun Devils a scare in Tempe, Arizona, as they led a majority of the game but fell 62-59. Tarleton led ASU by as many as 12 points, outscoring them off turnovers 22 to 11. Jakorie Smith led the Texans with 16 points, as well as recording seven rebounds against a much taller Sun Devil squad. With just three minutes remaining, Tarleton gained a seven-point lead over Arizona State, before the Sun Devils went on a 12-point run to finish the game with the lead. The Texans did not let this bog them down, as they responded with a 95-49 victory in their home opener of the 2022-23 season against the Falcons of Kansas Christian. Tarleton only led by nine going into halftime, but the adjustments made by head coach Billy Gillispie worked well, as the Texans outscored the Falcons 56-to-12 over the course of the second half. Tydan Archibald and Garry Clark were atop the stat sheet, with Archibald finishing with 15 points, going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, and Clark picking up his first 14 points of the season. The Texans head down to St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands to compete in the Paradise Jam Friday through Monday. Their first game will be Friday at 4:45 p.m. against Belmont. If the Texans win, they will face the winner between George Mason and Boston College on Sunday at 7 p.m. If they fall against Belmont, they will face the loser of that matchup on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. All placing games will be Monday, Nov. 21. The other universities in attendance at the Paradise Jam will be Buffalo, Drake, Howard, and Wyoming. The next Tarleton game following the Paradise Jam will be at Wichita State on Nov. 26.

TEXAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL looked unstoppable in their home openers against Arlington Baptist and UNT Dallas. The Texans' 90-40 victory against Arlington Baptist was their largest season-opening win in 18 years. Newcomer Teresa Da Silva impressed all-around, recording game-highs in points (20), rebounds (seven), and assists (six), while adding two steals and two blocks. The bench was led by Viktoria Ivanova, who dropped 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, three rebounds and two steals. Tarleton also forced 27 turnovers with 21 steals, the most steals by the Texans in a game in at least the past 10 years. UNT Dallas was a tight battle to start things off, as the Texans only led by one going into halftime. A 49-point second half from Tarleton helped lift the Texans to their second win of the season, beating the Trailblazers 73-46. Elise Turrubiates and Nya Mitchels led the Texans with 14 points each and dominant performances on the glass. The Texans head to Nashville on Tuesday to take on SEC member Vanderbilt at 11 a.m. They will return home on Friday to battle the College of Charleston at 6 p.m. in Wisdom Gym. There will be a pregame tailgate prior to the tip-off of this game with games and food trucks available. Tarleton's next game will be Nov. 22 as they head to Lincoln for a B1G battle against Nebraska.

TEXAN FOOTBALL looked unstoppable in their opening 75-yard touchdown drive to begin their game at Utah Tech, but did not have enough time to bounce back from their mistakes and the Trailblazers' offense in a 34-28 loss. This drops the Texans to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the WAC. Beau Allen went completed 28-of-48 passes for 397 yards, one touchdown and an interception, but the Texans' ground attack was not as strong as their season average, as they were held to 66 rushing yards. Darius Cooper recorded his fourth 100+ yard game of the year, the second in his last three games, with 10 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the WAC's leading tackler, Qua'Shawn Washington, did it all once again, going for a tied-team-high eight tackles, adding a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Donovan Banks also had eight tackles out of the secondary. The Texans return to Memorial Stadium to wrap up their 2022 season and look to finish with a positive record as they take on Houston Christian at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

TEXAN VOLLEYBALL concluded their 2022 season in Edinburg against 1st place UTRGV. Seniors Ana Costas, Emma Halcomb, Brianna Rhodes, Jaylibeth Garcia-Rosa, and Haley Flanagan donned the purple and white for the last time and gave their best efforts in the 5-set battle against the Vaqueros. Megan Haynes and Breanna McDonough led the way offensively with 14 kills each. The Texans also fell to New Mexico State earlier in the week. Tarleton finishes the season with a 12-17 overall record, going 4-10 in the WAC. The next news surrounding Texan Volleyball that can be expected is All-WAC awards and potential team additions.
