WACO, Texas – Two main draw singles tickets and a doubles run highlighted the Texans' time on the Brazos.
"It's another great competitive weekend in the books for us," said head coach
Elianne Douglas-Miron. "Emma [Persson] had an impressive weekend, coming out of the qualifying and beating a player from Rice in the first round."
Persson once again saw success on the court for the Purple and White in singles action. Persson won two straight on opening day against Houston and Incarnate Word to punch her ticket to the main draw on Friday.
With a spot locked into the field of 64 on Friday, Persson got an early start beating Chie Kezuka of Rice to send her to the round of 32. She was one of two Texans to face an opponent from Texas in the round of 32.
"Martha [Makantasi] beat a Power Five opponent in Houston and competed well," Douglas-Miron said. "Being able to compete at this level means we are moving in the right direction. Our program is growing and I'm looking forward to our last event of the fall at the end of the month."
With an automatic bid to the singles main draw, Makantasi opened her time with a bang. With her spot locked into the round of 64, Makantasi earned her way to the round of 32 with a win over Laura Slisane of Power Five conference member, University of Houston. In the round of 32, Makantasi saw stiff competition in the University of Texas.
On the doubles side of things,
Maretha Burger and Makantasi saw a deep run come to fruition. Following a hard-fought loss in the opening round of play, the pair made a deep run in the consolation bracket.
Burger and Makantasi earned a first-round bye before facing a pair from Texas State. The Texans dominated with an 8-1 win over the Bobcats. They then moved onto the quarter-finals and faced North Texas where they faced a bigger challenge, still coming away with the win 8-5. The Texans' run came to an end when they faced off against the Texas in the semi-finals.
The Texans will be back in action Oct. 27-29 when they head to Abilene for the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Abilene Christian.
