STEPHENVILLE, Texas — New head coach Fuller Smith's first season is quickly approaching, and now Texan Nation can mark their calendars to get out to the ballpark to watch his team.
Tarleton State Baseball announced their 2024 schedule on Thursday, a 55-game slate that begins on Feb. 16.
''It's a very competitive schedule there is no doubt about that. We are excited for the challenges each year will bring and know the Tarleton family will enjoy watching our young men compete against some of the best competition regionally as well as nationally, '' said head coach, Fuller Smith.
''The 30 game WAC schedule is a war, week in and week out, with the addition of some power five and regional powers in our non-conference. This should make for an exciting season ahead. We look forward to seeing the Tarleton faithful out in full force this spring,'' stated Smith.
The Texans will host 24 games at the Tarleton Baseball Complex in Stephenville, starting Feb. 23 with their home series opener against Northern Colorado.
Tarleton has 21 opponents on the docket this year, 13 of which finished .500 or above a season ago, including three who advanced to NCAA Regional competition.
Tarleton State will play in five other states besides Texas, going as far as California. They'll begin their 2024 campaign in Hammond, Louisiana, against Southeastern Louisiana at Alumni Field from Feb. 16-18. They'll then have a single game against UTSA in San Antonio at Roadrunner Field on Feb. 20 before returning to Stephenville for a four-game series from Feb. 23-25 against the Northern Colorado Bears.
The Texans will then hit the road again, beginning with a return trip to San Antonio for a single game against Incarnate Word on Feb. 27 at Sullivan Field. The Purple and White will then play a four-game series in Conway, Arkansas, against Central Arkansas at Bear Stadium on March 1-3.
It will be a five-game homestand following the five-game road trip, starting with a repeat opponent for the Texans. This time Tarleton will host UTSA on March 5. The Texans will open up conference play with a three-game series against rival Abilene Christian March 8-10. The homestand concludes March 12 against Texas State.
On March 15-17, the Texans will be in Phoenix to face Grand Canyon at GCU Ballpark. There won't be a midweek game for the first time in 2024, as the Texans will host a weekend series against California Baptist on March 22-24. They'll then host another repeat opponent during the week, this time against Incarnate Word at home on March 26.
Tarleton State will head to the Piney Woods to take on Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, at Jaycees Field March 28-20.
To begin their April slate, the Texans will face Dallas Baptist in Dallas at Horner Ballpark on April 2. For the weekend, Tarleton State will be at home against Seattle U from April 5-7 before a weekend series in St. George, Utah, at Bruce Hurst Field against Utah Tech April 12-14.
Tarleton returns home for a midweek two-game set against New Mexico State April 16-17 before a weekend home conference series against UTRGV April 19-21.
The longest road trip of the season for the Texans begins April 23 at Abilene Christian in Abilene at Crutcher Scott Field. It's a nine-game trip, with three games at Sacramento State in Sacramento at John Smith Field April 26-28 followed by a game at Texas A&M in College Station at Blue Bell Park April 30. Then Smith will return to his previous stop, Huntsville, Texas, to face his old Sam Houston squad at Don Sanders Stadium May 3-5. Finally, the Texans' nine-game trip ends at Baylor in Waco, Texas, on May 7 at Baylor Ballpark.
The final home series for the Texans will be May 10-12 against Utah Valley. They'll play their final regular season games at UT Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark on May 16-18 before heading to Mesa, Arizona, for the WAC Tournament at Hohokam Stadium May 21-25.
