NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Texans held the scoring advantage for the majority of Wednesday's game, but a late scoring drought resulted in a 65-60 loss on the road to SFA at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Tarleton (14-13, 8-7 WAC) were first on the board, courtesy of a dagger three-pointer from
Freddy Hicks.
SFA (17-9, 9-4 WAC) was held scoreless until three minutes had elapsed in the first half as the Texans took an early five-point lead. The Lumberjacks flipped the script however, responding with a 9-0 run to hold Tarleton scoreless over three minutes to take the lead by four.
The Texans began working their way back, tying the game at 12 thanks to a
Shamir Bogues make from deep with 11 minutes remaining in the half.
Tarleton the assembled a 12-0 run, holding SFA to yet another three-minute scoring drought, to gain a nine-point lead. With six minutes left in the half, the Texans amassed their largest lead of the game at 11 points.
The Lumberjacks fought back, tying the game at 32 all as the horn sounded to end the first half.
The Texans came out strong in the second half with a 7-0 run, holding SFA scoreless over two minutes.
The Lumberjacks tried to erase their deficit, but consecutive three pointers from
Lue Williams and
Jakorie Smith repeated Tarleton's largest lead of the game of 11 points. At the halfway mark of the second half, SFA had reduced the Texans' lead to just three.
SFA earned their first lead of the second half with seven minutes left in the game, but a pair of free throws from Hicks turned the score back in Tarleton's favor.
The teams exchanged three pointers and Tarleton retained a one-point lead with just under three minutes to go in the game.
The Lumberjacks regained a slight lead before a free throw from Hicks tied the game up at 60 with two minutes remaining.
The Texans couldn't get their shots to fall in the final minute of play and were forced to foul, resulting in a 65-60 loss on the road to the Lumberjacks.
Tarleton was led in scoring by Williams, the Fireside District Player of the Game, with 12 points (5-7 FG, 2-3 3PT). He also grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists.
Smith covered the stat sheet off the bench, earning 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Bogues picked up 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Hicks scored nine points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Shakur Daniel also picked up nine points, earning four rebounds, a game-high six assists and two steals to boot.
Tiger Booker scored four points and
Noah McDavid picked up three points.
Tarleton heads back home for the first time in two weeks to take on Sam Houston State on Saturday in Wisdom Gym. Last time out the Texans lost a close battle against the Bearkats in Huntsville, Texas. After a road stretch that saw them play four road games in nine days, the Tarleton will honor those who serve and have served in their Armed Forces Night game.
