EDINBURG, Texas – The Texans forced the Vaqueros into overtime, but ultimately suffer a loss on the road in the final seconds of the game.
Tarleton's (15-15, 9-9 WAC) overwhelming defense forced 26 turnovers for the Vaqueros, which they capitalized on with 40 points off such plays. The Texans outscored UTRGV (15-15, 6-11 WAC) in the paint and their bench contributed a critical 43 points in the game.
The Vaqueros struck first off the tip-off, but the Texans responded quickly and kept pace with UTRGV through the first five minutes of the half.
A three-pointer from
Lue Williams earned Tarleton their first lead of the game and a tough drive in the paint from
KiAndre Gaddy grew the lead to three.
The teams stayed neck-and-neck through the first half until a three-pointer from the Vaqueros earned them back the lead with just under seven minutes to play in the half. UTRGV quickly grew their lead to six points through an 8-2 run.
The Texans responded with a 14-6 run over the final minutes of the half to secure a 40-38 lead heading into the locker room.
Shamir Bogues opened the second half with a clinical hook shot to extend Tarleton's lead. Four minutes into the half the Vaqueros regained the lead, but a Texan rally led by Gaddy, Bogues and
Jakorie Smith restored Tarleton's advantage.
The teams traded buckets back-and-forth before UTRGV busted out a seven-point lead with just under five minutes left in the game.
The Texans assembled a 7-1 run to cut their deficit down to one point and a layup from Smith tied the game at 83 with 30 seconds left in regulation. A last second shot from the Vaqueros bounced off the rim, sending the game into overtime.
Bogues carried his second half start into overtime, scoring the first four points to put the Texans ahead 87-83. UTRGV answered with a three-pointer, but layups from Gaddy and
Coreyoun Rushin kept the Tarleton in the lead.
The Vaqueros put together a 9-1 run to flip the script and take a five-point lead with under a minute to play. Three-straight free throws from
Shakur Daniel brought the Texans within two points, but Tarleton was forced to foul in the final seconds resulting in a 99-95 loss on the road.
Bogues led Tarleton in scoring with 19 points. He picked up five steals, four assists and three rebounds while causing havoc offensively for UTRGV.
Daniel earned 15 points, a team-high five assists, three rebounds and three steals. Smith picked up 14 points, five steals, a team-high four rebounds and two assists.
Gaddy scored 13 points (5-6 FG, 3-3 FT) and had a game-high three blocks. Williams earned 11 points and
Tiger Booker went 4-for-4 from the field to pick up eight points.
Freddy Hicks picked up seven points and Rushin scored six points and dished out three assists.
Tarleton will finish the regular season at home on Tuesday, hosting the Dallas Christian Crusaders. The Texans will recognize their graduating players on Senior Night before turning their attention to the WAC Tournament. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
