IOWA CITY, Iowa – The final tournament in Tarleton's regular season had a bit of a screwy start, changing last minute to a Friday-Saturday format instead of the scheduled Saturday-Sunday event due to impending inclement weather.
The Texans played about 27 holes on Friday after a practice round in the morning, then played their other 27 holes on Saturday, taking eighth as a team at +7 (871) at Iowa's Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.
Jack Anderson and
Max Bengtsson tied for the best score on the Texans at +1, with Anderson (75-72-70) finishing strong and Bengtsson (71-68-78) opening well. Both placed tied-23rd.
Alvaro Huidobro was just two strokes back, turning in at +3 (73-74-72) for tied-31st.
Masen Ward (77-76-73) and
Cristobal Sepulveda (73-79-74) both tied-53rd at +10.
Iowa won their own tournament at -29 and had the medalist with Mac McClear shooting -10.
In six tournaments this spring, Anderson has been +4 or better across 54 holes in each event. In his second round of the Hawkeye Invitational, he had just two holes worse than par, and in his tournament-best final round, he holed five birdies, including three straight from Nos. 8-10. He finished with the tied-11th best score on Par 3's in the event at +1 and had the tied-12th most birdies overall (12).
Bengtsson dominated Par 5's in Iowa City, shooting -8 on such holes, the tied-sixth best score in the 75-man field. Across his first 36 holes, he turned in just four holes at worse than par, recording a birdie in his second-to-last hole to cap off his Round 2 68 (-4). That matched his lowest single-round score of the season.
Huidobro's +3 performance was a season-best, surpassing his +7 at The Big Texan Invitational. He finished the Hawkeye Invitational with a tied-season-best single-round of 72 (E). Huidobro matched Bengtsson at -8 on Par 5's, which boosted Tarleton to the tied-third best score as a team on such holes in the tournament (-30).
Ward played his best golf on Saturday, capping it off with his best round of +1 (73). For Sepulveda, he birdied his starting hole, No. 6, in all three rounds.
Next up for Tarleton is their first WAC Championship. The conference tournament will be a three-day event from April 28-30 in Boulder City, Nevada, at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
