BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Tarleton's first season in nearly 30 years concluded on Sunday at the WAC Championship, where they turned in their best round on the final day in their first conference tournament.
Jack Anderson led the Texans like he did most of the season, shooting -4 (72, 69, 71) to finish tied-17th. As a team, Tarleton took 10th at -1 (287, 293, 283) in Boulder City, Nevada, at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
"It was not the performance we were wanting, but I'm overall pleased with the progress this team made in the first year," head coach Chance Cain said. "This week we had the game to be in the top-five with 61 under-par strokes, but we made too many mistakes to keep us in the running. It's something the team is well aware of and now we have the summer break to work like crazy to clean those areas up in order to be ready for the fall start.
"I'm happy for Jack to finish off the season with another solid performance for the program," Cain continued. "He has set the bar for other players to reach."
Anderson finished his collegiate career with an incredible spring semester. Across seven total tournaments, he shot under-par four times, and across 21 total rounds, he fired six rounds in the 60's.
Max Bengtsson was next on the individual leaderboard for the Texans in Boulder City, carding +1 (71, 77, 69) for tied-35th.
Masen Ward shot +2 (75, 73, 70) for tied-39th,
Alvaro Huidobro went +3 (69, 76, 74) for tied-43rd, and
Cristobal Sepulveda shot +14 (82, 75, 73) for 60th.
Of Tarleton's five members, three had their best 18 holes in the final round to put the team under-par for the event and move them into the top-10.
Grand Canyon won the WAC Championship at -34 (280, 273, 277) while New Mexico State's Garrison Smith was the medalist at -19 (64, 65, 68).
Anderson showcased his low scoring ability throughout the three-day, 54-hole tournament by holing the tied-fifth most birdies (15). In his first round, he was bogey-free through the first eight holes (-2), then spotted a couple of rare double bogeys over his next seven holes. But he responded with three straight birdies to end his first round. That ended up being a six straight birdie stretch, as he opened Saturday -3 through three. He was even-par over the next 15 to finish with his best round of 69. In the final round, he had three birdies through his first six holes, going +1 over the last 11 to finish -4 overall.
The Texan freshman Bengtsson ended his WAC Championship with his best round of 69. He had just one bogey across the 18 holes, not until No. 16, going -3 through his first 11 and capping off the day with a birdie to shoot -3. At tied-35th, he improved his place on the individual leaderboard with 13 spots on Sunday.
Ward ended his collegiate career by shooting -3 over his final 12 holes, a clean finish with three birdies. He had the tied-second best overall score on Par 5's in the tournament at -10, averaging a gross score of 4.17.
Huidobro, a sophomore, led the Texans after the first day at -3 (69). He bogeyed the first, then went -4 over the next 17 with five birdies and a bogey, including a clean final 12 holes.
Sepulveda, the third underclassmen and second freshman playing for Tarleton at the WAC Championship, shot +1 (73) on Sunday for his best round of the event, which included an eagle on the Par 5, 533-yard fifth hole.
As a team, Tarleton had the sixth most birdies (57) and fifth best score on Par 5's (-29).
