STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Texans returned home Thursday and played some of their best tennis of the year, showcasing their depth in their win against Grand Canyon. One of the major storylines,
Celia Vaudiau, will be the storyline again on Saturday as Tarleton plans to celebrate their lone senior in their final home match of the season.
It's Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT in Stephenville for Tarleton's match against WAC foe New Mexico State. The Texans are 4-2 in WAC play this year (12-6 overall), owning the third best record in the conference, just a match short of the top two placeholders. Currently UT Arlington and UTRGV are each 5-1, but one of them is guaranteed a loss on Saturday as they square off in Arlington.
The Aggies bring in an even 10-10 record to Stephenville, 4-3 in WAC play. They narrowly lost at Abilene Christian on Thursday 4-3 following an east Texas sweep over Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin.
Last year, the Texans beat the Aggies 4-3 in Stephenville, with
Martha Makantasi clinching the match in the last match of the day with the team score tied 3-3. She defeated Natsuki Nishimura on Court 3 3-6 6-4 6-3. Vaudiau and
Elsa Boisson also played that day, with Vaudiau winning in singles on Court 5 6-2 6-3 over Bella Nguyen and Boisson winning in doubles, alongside
Jemi Aguilar, 7-6(5) over Gavi Kalaga and Nishimura in the No. 2 position.
The only certainties in the Aggie lineup this time around it appears is on the top two courts. Anna Pinaieva has played 18 of the team's 20 matches on Court 1 in singles (11-7), while Lisa Zhu has played 17 of her 18 matches in the No. 2 position. Pinaieva is the reigning WAC Singles Player of the Week after winning 6-0 6-1 and 6-2 6-2 against the top players from SFA and Sam Houston.
For the Texans, their top three lineup has been set for a while with
Emma Persson at the top, followed by Makantasi and Boisson. Persson and Boisson have a combined 25-8 (.758) record.
Clara Sobius would be a likely candidate for one of the other singles matches, as she's 12-6 this year. Vaudiau, in her final home match of her career, could end her time in Stephenville with a four-match winning streak, depending on if she's called on to follow her impressive comeback against GCU.
Tarleton has just three matches remaining overall before the WAC Women's Tennis Tournament. Saturday's match will be
live streamed and have
live scoring.
