EDINBURG, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis will start conference play Friday morning in Edinburg with a 10 a.m. match against UTRGV. The Texans are 5-0 against UTRGV since joining the Western Athletic Conference, outscoring them 31-4.
 
Tarleton State sits at 9-2 overall this year and 4-1 on the road. The Vaqueros are 4-3 on their home court with an 8-6 record on the season. UTRGV is riding a three-match winning streak.
 
This 9-2 start for the Texans is their best record at this juncture since 2014. The Texans are coming off of a rare home loss, something that hadn't occurred in a full calendar year.
 
The Texans will only have conference action the remainder of the regular season. Since joining the WAC, the Texans are 17-3 in conference play.
 
On Friday, Tarleton State will look to start a new doubles point winning streak. The Texans just had a 10-match streak of winning the doubles point snapped, a point that has proved vital for Tarleton a few times this year. The Texans are 24-8 across all doubles matches this season, led by Martha Makantasi and Maretha Burger. They are 9-2 on the top court. UTRGV's best doubles pair is 6-3. The Vaqueros are 20-23 overall in doubles matches.
 
In singles, the Texans have a 44-22 record across all matches. Emma Persson has played most of the year on the top court, but the two record leaders are Noelia Lorca (10-1) and Makantasi (9-2). UTRGV's Yaiza Vazquez leads the Vaqueros at 11-5, with four straight wins.
 
After Friday, the Texans' week will continue at UT Arlington on Sunday at 11 a.m.
