STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Thursday, March 28, 2024, will mark a significant day in Tarleton Tennis history, as the Texans will open their brand new facility ahead of their conference match against Utah Tech.
The day begins promptly at 10:30 a.m. at the Tarleton Tennis Facility, located by the Tarleton Baseball and Softball complexes with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Tarleton State President Dr. James Hurley and Tarleton Tennis head coach
Elianne Douglas-Miron will help unveil the new permanent home for Texan Tennis.
Following the ceremony, the Texans (11-2, 2-0 WAC) will take the courts for their first home competition in Stephenville that's not at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts, which were constructed 45 years ago. Tarleton will take on Western Athletic Conference foe Utah Tech (5-10, 0-2 WAC), with first serve at 11 a.m.
As for the match itself, the Texans are entering with a spotless conference record, coming off of a big comeback win at UT Arlington. In that match on Sunday, Tarleton State lost the doubles point, then lost the first set in five of the six singles matches. They stormed back to secure the match's final five points, taking five singles matches in three sets to win 5-2.
Tarleton, Grand Canyon and Abilene Christian are the only WAC teams to start conference play undefeated through two matches. The Texans have the tied-fewest overall losses across all WAC teams (two).
In singles play, the Texans are a combined 54-24 (.692), with the top records held by
Noelia Lorca (12-1),
Martha Makantasi (11-2),
Elsa Boisson (9-4) and
Clara Sobius (8-4).
In doubles action, the Texans are a combined 27-11 (.711), with the top duo records held by
Emma Persson and Lorca (9-1) and
Maretha Burger and Makantasi (9-4). Individually, Persson is 11-1 in doubles this year.
Utah Tech enters Thursday's match losers of three straight and five of their last six. Their five wins on the year have come against non-NCAA Division I teams, although they are 4-3 on the road this year.
The Trailblazers are 32-52 (.381) in singles across the board, plus 15-27 (.357) in doubles play. Utah Tech is coached by Erin Harold, who is in her first year at the helm.
The Texans are 3-0 against the Trailblazers since becoming a D1 program, outscoring them 20-1. This marks their first time hosting Utah Tech.
