STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Four members of the Tarleton State track and field program were named the WAC Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The Texans competed at the Corky Classic and four individuals were rewarded for their efforts this past weekend by the conference.
Victoria Cameron earned her first selection as the women's track athlete of the week. She had a monstrous opening weekend of the calendar year, breaking the school record in both races of the 60 meter dash at the Corky Classic. In the preliminaries, she shattered the previous record of 7.45 seconds crossing in 7.25. Just a few hours later she broke the record again turning in a 7.19 time in the semifinal round. She qualified second for the finals but was one of the three runners to not participate in their third race of the day. Her 7.19 mark ranks as the fourth fastest in the NCAA this season after the first few weekends of competition. It also ranks seventh in the world this calendar year, and second in the calendar year among all US-born female athletes.
On the field side,
Sofia DeGroot took home the honor as women's field athlete of the week. She topped the conference in both the triple jump and long jump across the weekend. The Lubbock, Texas, native, set a new indoor personal best in the long jump at 5.83 long jump also leads the conference this season. She also posted the best jump of the week in the WAC with a 12.10 meter leap in the triple jump, the second best in the WAC this indoor season.
Aidan Matthews is the men's indoor track and field athlete of the week after breaking the school record in the 200 meters. He finished 10
th at the Corky Classic behind seven SEC runners, an ACC runner and a professional circuit runner. His time of 21.21 broke teammate
David Mvundura's 21.28 record set a season ago. Matthews mark was the fastest in the conference in the 200 this weekend and ranks fourth in the WAC this season.
Finally,
Gabriele Tosti took home the WAC Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. The Italy native nearly broke his own school record in the triple jump of 16.03 meters with a 15.98 meter leap at the Corky Classic. Still, he finished second in the event in Lubbock and owns the top jump in the conference this season. His 15.98 mark is the fifth best in the NCAA this season. He holds the 13
th best jump in the world this calendar year and is fourth among Italy-born athletes.
Tarleton will host its first and only meet of the season on April 26-27 at the Tarleton State Track and Field Complex. The Joe Gillespie Invitational will be a two-day event culminating in a special recognition for the graduating seniors.
Tarleton State Track and Field will have this week off before returning to Lubbock next weekend Jan. 30-31 for the Stan Scott Invite & Multis. The meet will be held at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center and is expected to be streamed on ESPN+ with live results on Pt timing.
