LAWRENCE, Kan. — Tarleton State Women's Golf is headed to the Midwest for the Marilynn Smith Invitational hosted by the University of Kansas at Lawrence Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Texans will be one of two teams in the 14-team field from the WAC joining California Baptist. Also competing this weekend will be: Arkansas State, Ball State, Central Arkansas, Delaware, Drake, Kansas, Missouri, Notre Dame, St. Thomas, UC Davis, UC Fullerton and UC Irvine. The host school and 2024 Marilynn Smith Invitational Kansas Jayhawks will look to defend their title. Tarleton State is joined by UC Davis and Kansas as the three schools in the field to play in an NCAA Regional las t season.
The two-day, 54-hole event will tee off on Monday with a pair of rounds. Tuesday will have the third and final round. The 6,085 yard, par 72 course will have a double tee start for all three rounds. The Texans will be competing with the same five they sent to Eastern Washington for the Kalispel Invitational. For the second-straight tournament the squad will be without the 2025 WAC Tournament Champion and Co-Player of the Year,
Louise Depadt. Depadt underwent successful surgery earlier this week and is expected to make a speedy recovery. She is very excited to get back out on the course and join her teammates in their quest later this season.
As a team, the Texans have finished sixth in each of the first two competitions. Last time out, the Texans were the only program to shoot under par as a team in the final round.
Gina Chen posted her best finish as a Texan two weeks ago, finishing in the top 10 for the first time. She placed seventh overall and carded a pair of two-under par, 70 stroke rounds. She will be slated in the first slot for the first time this season. Playing out of the second slot will be
Lou Deltombe. Deltombe closed the Kalispel Invitational with a strong two-under par final round to climb 20 places to finish in a tie for 12th. Deltombe's five-over par, 221 is her best 54-hole round score this season.
Darianys Guzman is the only Texan to notch a pair of top 20 performances in the first two events of the season. Guzman shot an even par final round to finish in a tie for 16th at the Kalispel Invitational at six-over par. In the first outing of the season, she led the Texans tying for an 11th place finish at The Southern. Guzman will be the No. 3 for Tarleton State. Newcomer
Natalia Fiel Ros posted her best finish as a Texan in her second invitational of the fall. Fiel Ros, the Kansas State transfer, tied for 60th two weeks ago. She will be competing in the fourth spot for the Texans this weekend. Rounding out the group of five,
Rebeca Fernandez also posted her best 54-hole score this season at the Kalispel Invitational. She improved by 16 strokes in her second event of the season.
Tarleton State will play one more time in October, once again in Kansas, but this time in Manhattan, Kan. The Texans will play on Oct. 21-22 in the Powercat Invitational hosted by Kansas State.
