STEPHENVILLE, Texas –
Prestina Ochonogor won the Nigerian National Championship in the women's long jump and
Lauren Roy earned a pair of medals as five Texans represented their countries at their national championships this weekend.
Five Texans had the opportunity of representing Tarleton State while competing at their country's national championships this weekend. Ochonogor earned the long jump title at the Nigerian National Championships. Roy earned a pair of medals in the 100 and 200 at the Irish National Championships.
Amandine Estival reached the finals of the 200 at the French National Championships.
Victoria Cameron raced against a loaded field at the USTAF Championships in the 100 and earned an 18
th place finish overall, third among collegiate athletes.
Sir Jonathan Sims placed in the top 16 at the USATF Championships in both the long and triple jump.
"What a great weekend it was for our Texan track and field team," said head coach Bobby Carter. "To have representation all around the world is great to see. These individuals competed well and placed amongst the top in their perspective countries. I am very proud of each and every one of them and excited to hopefully see some compete at the World Championships later in September. My goal for this year was to put Tarleton State on the map. I can proudly say this team has done so!"
Prestina Ochonogor won the Nigerian national championship in the women's long jump. The 18-year-old was dominant to earn the title with a best leap of 6.52 meters, besting the rest of the competition by over half a meter. Ochonogor will now wait to see if she is accepted into the World Championships to represent Team Nigeria in Tokyo this September. This would mark the second time she would represent Nigeria at the global stage as she competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She also competed in the 100 in the preliminary rounds, winning her heat in 11.48 seconds.
Lauren Roy earned a pair of medals at the Irish National Championships. She opened on Saturday in the women's 200 meters. She clocked in at 23.88 seconds to earn the bronze medal, just 0.33 seconds behind the victor. The next day on Sunday, she won her preliminary heat in the 100 to earn a spot in the finals. In the finals, she finished in second to her a silver medal, her second of the championships crossing in 11.49 seconds.
Victoria Cameron raced among the nation's and world's best sprinters in the 100-meter dash at the USATF National Championships. In the preliminary heat, Cameron lined up next to Sha'Carri Richardson and finished fourth in her heat in 11.11 seconds. She led Richardson out of the blocks and finished just 0.04 second behind the 2023 World Champion and 2025 Olympic Silver Medalist in the event. Cameron finished 14
th overall in the prelims earning a spot in Friday's semifinals. In the semis, she crossed in 11.33 seconds to finish fourth in her heat and 18
th overall. The sophomore finished third among collegiate athletes as the top nine in the finals were all professional sprinters. Cameron will now have time to rest and recuperate after a long season across indoor, outdoor and summer competitions.
Sir Jonathan Sims posted a pair of top 20 finishes at the USATF National Championships in both the long and triple jump. On Friday, he posted a 16
th place finish in the long jump. He logged a best leap of 7.13 meters on his first attempt to earn 16
th. The senior then posted a 14
th place finish in the triple jump on Sunday. His best leap of 15.39 meters came on his third and final jump.
Amandine Estival competed in both the 100 and 200 at the French National Championships. In the 100 on Saturday, she finished third in her heat and 12
th overall in 11.76 seconds On Sunday, she posted a third-place finish in her 200-meter heat in 23.87 seconds to advance to the finals later that day. In the finals she posted an eighth-place performance in 24.17 seconds.
These five that competed in their national championships will be joined by
Lokesh Sathyanathan also competing at the Indian National Championships later this month. Sathyanathan will look to add another potential Texan to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September.
