Tarleton State is back home for Family Weekend, its second home game of the year after hosting a record crowd in the opener. The Texans will face the Merrimack Warriors on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
 
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, with John Liddle and Hek'ma Harrison on the call. The game can be heard on Tarleton Sports Network at 90.5 FM and 93.1 FM in Stephenville and surrounding areas, with Byron Anderson, Kyle Masters, Keltin Wiens and Ty Walker leading the broadcast.
 
GAME DAY FESTIVITIES
Tarleton State will be giving away 1,000 shirts to first arriving fans, courtesy Triple Crown Ford, to help promote Family Weekend.
 
Texan Alley Tailgate will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Pointe-du-Hoc rally will be at 2:40 p.m. at Rudder Way Statue. ABOUT THE MATCHUP

• This is the first all-time meeting, Tarleton State's second game against a brand-new opponent so far this season (at Bowling Green).
• This is Merrimack's third straight road game. The Warriors defeated Maine 23-14 on Saturday to snap an eight-game road losing streak. The Warriors last won back-to-back road games in 2024.
• The Warriors are 14th in the nation in time of possession (33:54 per). They're top-50 in takeaways (No. 43, four) with three INTs.
• Merrimack has yet to have a 300-yard passer, a 100-yard rusher or a 100-yard receiver this season. The Texans achieved all three of those marks in a single-game this past weekend.

The Texans are afraid of no one. Tarleton State won 20-13 at Bowling Green, spoiling the Falcons' season-opener in front of 13,367 fans at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. This makes back-to-back FBS wins for Tarleton State following the Texans' 30-27 2OT win at Army in West Point, New York, last year. Tarleton State is the 16th program to earn FBS wins in the same or consecutive seasons since the FCS and FBS labels were created in '06. Tarleton State is also the 22nd FCS program with 3+ FBS wins, as the Texans earned their first FBS win against New Mexico State in 2021. GOLD MINE HINES
Tarleton State's Tylan Hines is unstoppable. The fifth-year RB has been named the UAC Offensive Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks, plus was named the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week after his special outing at Bowling Green. Hines rushed for 250 yards on 26 carries (9.6 YPC), and added 47 receiving yards on two receptions to reach 297 yards from scrimmage in Tarleton State's FBS road win.
- Hines' 250 rush yards are the most rush yards in a single-game across both FBS and FCS this season. The next closest is 227 by Duke's Nate Sheppard against Tulane on Sept. 5. Hines has the tied-fifth most in a single-game in Tarleton State Football program history.
- Through three games, Hines has three of the FCS' top-20 single-game rushing performances this season.
- Hines has the most rush yards this season across the FBS and FCS, now at 575. The next closest is Southern Utah's Floyd Chalk at 427.
- Hines is averaging the most rush yards per game across the FBS and FCS this season at 191.7 YPG. The next closest is at 187.0 by Duke's Nate Sheppard, and the next closest in the FCS is at 142.3 rush yards per game by Southern Utah's Floyd Chalk.
- Hines is averaging the second most yards per carry in the FCS at 8.46.
- Hines has now played in eight games as a Texan, five in 2025 and three in 2026. He's rushed for 200+ yards twice, 100+ yards five times, and already has 1,085 career rush yards at Tarleton State (135.6 per game).
 
UAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tarleton State Football has already earned five UAC Player of the Week awards through three games. This past week, Hines was named UAC Offensive Player of the Week, and kicker Alejandro De La Poza was named UAC Special Teams Player of the Week. De La Poza made the game-winning field goal as time expired to lift Tarleton State to a 27-24 win at McNeese. De La Poza made 2-of-3 field goal attempts, missing his initial attempt from 42 yards out, then back-to-back 24-yard makes, including the game-winner. De La Poza provided Tarleton State's first offensive walk-off win as time expired in just over a calendar year. The last was kicker Brad Larson making a field goal at West Point, New York, to beat Army in double overtime on Aug. 29, 2025. De La Poza's two field goal makes tied a season-high, and he also went 3-for-3 on extra point attempts, now 12-for-12 on the year.
 
At Bowling Green, Aubert had two forced fumbles and eight tackles in Tarleton State's win. Both of Aubert's forced fumbles resulted in Texan takeaways, and his two forced fumbles are the most in a game across the FBS and FCS this season. His two forced fumbles are also the most in a game by a Texan since 2023 (Blake Smith vs. North Alabama on Sept. 9).
 
After the first game, DeAndre Buchannon was named UAC Special Teams Player of the Week following his standout debut for the Texans. At kick returner, Buchannon covered 76 yards on two returns, including a 45-yard return, in Tarleton State's season-opening 49-30 win over Prairie View A&M. Buchannon is a Preseason All-American at kick returner, and showed why right away, returning the opening kickoff 31 yards, then returning it 45 yards in the second quarter. Buchannon had the third most kick return yards in a game across the FCS' opening weekend.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Tarleton State beat McNeese on a field goal as time expired, a 24-yarder by Alejandro De La Poza, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Texans handled business in their second straight road game of the early season, beating McNeese for the third straight time, 27-24 on Saturday night. The Texans are now 3-3 all-time against the Cowboys, a series that dates back to 1949, with three straight wins since 2023. The Texans are also 7-1 over their past eight road games overall. In the seven wins, they have held every opponent under 30 points, allowing an average of 14.9 points per game.
 
De La Poza was the hero on Saturday, providing Tarleton State's first offensive walk-off win as time expired in just over a calendar year.
 
Tarleton State running back Tylan Hines pushed his NCAA Division I leading rushing total further by racing for 141 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries (8.3 YPC). He now has a D1 leading 575 rush yards through three games (191.7 per), on 68 carries (8.5 YPC) with four rush touchdowns. Tarleton State quarterback threw for a season-high 363 yards on 28-of-48 passing, with a rushing touchdown and no turnovers for the third straight game. Nearly half of his production went to wide receiver Marquis Willis, who finished with 166 yards on 10 receptions, both career-high marks. Bryce Parker added 89 yards on seven receptions. Stephen Woods Jr. led the Texans in tackles with nine. Fredd Adams had seven tackles, a TFL and a pass breakup. De La Poza made 2-of-3 field goal attempts, missing his initial attempt from 42 yards out, then back-to-back 24-yard makes, including the game-winner. Punter Charlie Mullen had five punts cover 211 yards (42.2 per), pinning the Cowboys twice inside their own 5-yard line, the 3-yard line in the first quarter and the 1-yard line in the second quarter. DeAndre Buchannon showed his explosive ability in the return game once again, taking one 40 yards.
 
BEST IN TEXAS
Todd Whitten began his third stint as head coach for Tarleton State Football in 2016. Since that mark, now in Tarleton State's 10th season, the Texans have the highest win percentage among scholarship football programs in the entire state of Texas. The Texans enter Saturday's game with a .700 winning percentage since the start of 2016, the highest mark across all of the NCAA Division I and II programs in the state. They have 84 wins since the start of 2016, the second most wins in the state by an NCAA Division I or II program. The list of the top scholarship programs in Texas over that span:

WHITTEN THE WINNER
Tarleton State Football and head coach Todd Whitten agreed to a contract extension during the offseason, extending him two years through 2029. Whitten finished top-five in the voting for the 2025 Eddie Robinson Award, which goes to the national coach of the year.
 
Whitten is the winningest coach in Tarleton State Football history, now with a 129-59 (.686) all-time record for the Purple and White now in his 17th season, and a 154-87 (.639) spot all-time as an NCAA head coach (in 22nd season). He's won seven Coach of the Year awards, six coming straight from the conference itself. Among Whitten's 16 completed seasons at Tarleton State, his team has finished .500 or better 15 times. The Texans have reached double-digit wins seven times in program history – Whitten has been the head coach for five of those seasons.
 
WELCOME TO STEPHENVILLE
The Texans announced in February a record 63-man National Signing Day class. This is the largest NSD class in Tarleton State Football history, and likely the best. According to AthLinkd, College Football's Premier Prospect Database, Tarleton State had the No. 1 class across all of the FCS. Earlier in the portal window, 247Sports had the Texans as the No. 1 ranked portal class in the FCS. 
 
Of the 63 players in the NSD class, 37 are on defense, 23 on offense, and three specifically for special teams. Of the 63, 54 are transfers and nine are high school signings. Of the transfers, 17 are joining Tarleton State from the FBS level, 10 are staying in the FCS, nine are from NCAA Division II and 16 are from the JUCO ranks. The largest class by position is the defensive line with 14, followed by 13 in the secondary, 10 linebackers, seven offensive linemen, six wide receivers, four quarterbacks, four running backs, two tight ends, a long snapper, a kicker and a punter. Statewise, 32 players are from Texas, five are from Florida and five from Georgia, with several others in the mix. And finally, there are 24 players who earned stars as a prospect in high school, with three four-star prospects, 20 three-star prospects and one two-star prospect. "We needed to replenish a large class – just about every starter on the defensive side were seniors, which is good – our plan is to be old every year and have a veteran team," Whitten said. "So, a big class graduated and we have a big class coming in. Our recent success has really helped us attract the best of the best here, not to mention our elite facilities, investment and culture."
 
PRESEASON NOTICE
After sharing the UAC regular season championship a season ago, Tarleton State and Abilene Christian have been voted to share the UAC preseason bragging rights, as well. The Texans (three first-place votes, 65 points) and the Wildcats (three first-place votes, 65 points) are tied-atop the 2026 UAC Football Preseason Coaches Poll, following a 2025 campaign with each team winning a share of the UAC championship with 7-1 conference records. Austin Peay received the other first-place votes (two) to finish third in the preseason poll with 62 points. Rounding out the eight conference members were Eastern Kentucky (48 points), Central Arkansas (43 points), West Georgia (39 points), North Alabama (37 points), and West Florida (33 points).
 
The preseason coaches poll and preseason all-conference players poll were voted on by head coaches across the United Athletic Conference. All eight UAC head coaches submitted votes, and they were not allowed to vote for their own players or their own team.
 
The Texans had five earn Preseason All-Conference selections, two on offense, two on special teams and one on defense. Running back Tylan Hines and offensive lineman Aidan Moe represented Tarleton State on offense, punter Charlie Mullen and return specialist DeAndre Buchannon (unanimous) represented the Texan special teams, and defensive back Omar Emmons represented the Texan defense. Tarleton State's five total honorees match the most they've had the D1 level (2025 in the UAC, 2024 in the UAC, 2022 in the WAC). There were 26 players honored across all preseason awards. Tarleton State had the second most honorees with five behind Abilene Christian (eight).
 
Moe and Buchannon were also named 2026 Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-Americans, placed on the Preseason All-America Second Team. Moe was among 10 offensive linemen on one of the first two All-America Teams, and Buchannon was one of two kick returners. This is the fourth straight year Tarleton State has earned recognition on the Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-America Teams. Last year, offensive lineman Hunter Smith was on the list, and became First Team All-Conference. In 2024, running back Kayvon Britten and wide receiver Darius Cooper made the preseason team, and both turned in All-American seasons.
 
Hines was named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List, the national award for the offensive player of the year. There were 30 players on the preseason watch list for the Payton. The award, in its 40th anniversary, is affectionately known as the Heisman of the FCS, named for legendary running back Walter Payton. Past recipients include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook and Cooper Kupp. Hines is one of 11 running backs on the preseason watch list, along with 11 QB's and eight wide receivers.
 
Mullen was one of 14 punters nationwide named to the Augusta Sports Council's 2026 FCS Punter of the Year Award Preseason Watch List. This award honors the nation's top collegiate punter in the Football Championship Series (FCS). "The 14 candidates on the list incorporate a broad spectrum of FCS punters and were compiled based on previous FCS Punter of the Year semifinalists, 2025 All-American, and All-Conference selections, top performing punters, and 2026 Preseason All-American and Preseason All-Conference selections," Augusta Sports Council announced in its release. "The FCS Punter of the Year Award winner will be determined by the FCS Punter of the Year Award national voting body, which consists of FCS sports information directors and national sports writers."
 
FEW WIN MORE THAN TARLETON STATE
Across the country, only 10 NCAA Division I teams (eight FBS, two FCS) have a better win percentage than Tarleton State since 2018 (North Dakota State, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, James Madison, Oregon, Montana State, South Dakota State, and Clemson). So among some other elite programs, Tarleton State has a higher W% than the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, USC, LSU, etc.
