CHOUDRANT, La. —
Kellen Young shot a -5 (67) in the final round at the Argent Financial Classic on Tuesday to lead Tarleton State Men's Golf in the Texans' third tournament of the season.
Young finished -6 in the three-day, three-round event, firing an even-par (72) round on Sunday, -1 (71) on Monday, and the best round by any Texan on the young season to end it. He was flawless on the card on Tuesday, with five birdies and 13 pars. Across the 54 holes, he had 13 birdies, seven bogeys and 34 pars. His tied-third place on the individual leaderboard was his highest mark as a Texan, and his -5 (67) was his best round since he shot -6 (66) at Lamar's Golden Nugget Invitational last March.
As a team, the Texans took 10th at +12, coinciding with Young on Tuesday for their best round of the tournament in Choudrant, Louisiana, hosted by LA Tech at Squire Creek Country Club. Tarleton State shot +11 on Sunday, +2 on Monday and -1 on Tuesday for its +12 (876). This was the Texans' best event on the year, 30 shots to par better than their opening event.
Drew Ironside tied-40th at +5 (75-70-76), recording his best round on Monday with seven of his nine birdies.
Nicholas Papacharalambous was +8 (77-73-74) and tied-51st. Noan Sandlin shot +10 (78-78-70) and tied-55th.
Jace Hulett made his team debut after playing as an individual last week, shooting +11 (75-76-76), tied-61st.
Troy won the 14-team tournament at -18, followed by North Texas in second at -15, LA Tech in third at -13, Lamar tied-fourth at -5, Texas State tied-fourth at -5, West Florida in sixth at +6, East Texas A&M tied-seventh at +8, Jax State tied-seventh at +8, ULM tied-seventh at +8, Tarleton State 10th at +12, Nicholls tied-11th at +26, Louisiana tied-11th at +26, LA Tech (B) 13th at +32, and LSU New Orleans 14th at +45.
Lamar's Nathan Woodham and LA Tech's Oskari Schuvalow shared the individual title at -10, with Young and three others four strokes back at -6, tied for third. The tournament in Louisiana was a 78-man field.
The Texans have one more tournament in the fall, playing at Wyoming's Tall City Collegiate in Midland, Texas, at Midland Country Club on Oct. 12-13.
