LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Tarleton tennis team competed in the Miner Fall Invite over the weekend and came away with a third-place finish in doubles action from Mariana Freitas and Rocio Cabanillas at the New Mexico State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M. The event, while on the NMSU campus, was hosted by  Texas-El Paso.

 

Freitas and Rocio Cabanillas teamed up to defeat Lonewolf and Reyes of Our Lady of the Lake (8-1) to give Tarleton their lone win in doubles play on Friday. In other doubles action on Friday, Adriana Jaskova and Carde Julen lost to Trierweiler and Glevova of UTEP (8-5), while Jade Charlot and Evgeniya Prokofeva lost (8-0) to DeLuca and Makasov, also of UTEP.

 

Prokofeva was the lone winner in singles action on Friday as she dismantled Holguin of OLLU in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). The senior then lost to Makashov, (6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4). In other TexAnn action, Cabanillas lost to M. Trierwelier of UTEP (6-0, 6-1); Jaskova lost to F Sunstrum of Lee (6-2, 6-2); Charlot lost to X. Fuentes of UTEP (6-1, 2-6, 6-3) but then  defeated D. Aklina of Lee (2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2); Juhlen lost to A. Masschelein of Arizona (4-6, 6-1, 6-2); and Freitas lost to S. Cassidy of Arizona (3-6, 6-1, 6-2).

 

Singles play went much better for the TexAnns on Saturday as Charlot defeated J. Perez of OLLU (6-0, 6-0); Freitas defeated M. Sierra of OLLU (6-0, 6-0), then defeated H. Huynh of Lee (7-6 (1), 6-3); Prokofeva defeated S. Landry of Lee (6-2, 6-1); Jaskova defeated T. Lonewolfe of OLLU (6-1, 6-3); and Cabanillas defeated F. Sundstum of Lee (6-1, 6-3)

 

In doubles action on Saturday, Freitas and Cabanillas lost to Marks/Costa of NM State (8-2) before Jaskova and Jolen lost to Sunstrum/Bassoo of Lee (8-5). Charlot and Prokofeva defeated Huynh/Landry of Lee (8-5) and  then defeated Sierra/Holguin of OLLU (8-0) to move on.  

 

The TexAnns capped off the tournament on Sunday winning six of seven matches played. Charlot dropped the only set of the day, falling (7-6, (2), 6-2) to UTEP's Glebova. Winning on Sunday were Prokofeva who defeated E. Rodriguez of NM State (6-3, 6-1); Freitas defeated Huynh of Lee (7-6 (1), 6-3); and Jaskova defeated Cabanillas (6-3, 6-2) in a battle of two Tarleton players.

 

All three doubles teams won their matches on Sunday as Jaskova and Jolen handed OLLU's Lonewolf and Reyes a (8-0) loss, while Charlot and Prokofeva downed NMSU's Salum and Rodriguez (8-5). Freitas and Cabanillas placed third in Flight A Doubles as the duo ousted Syvian and Pinero of NMSU (8-1).

 

The TexAnns will return to action next weekend as the team travels to Topeka, Kan. To participate in the ITA Central Regionals.
