CANYON - The Tarleton volleyball team will head to Canyon, Texas Thursday to face Midwestern State in the first round of the 2010 Lone Star Conference tournament.
The TexAnns and Mustangs will face off at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 as the No. 5 and No. 4 seeds respectively, with the winner taking on the winner of No.1 West Texas A&M and No. 8 Incarnate Word.
Tarleton and Midwestern State had the first meeting of the season Thursday, Nov. 4 in Wichita Falls, with the Mustangs taking a 3-1 victory over the TexAnns.
During that match, junior
Jessie Hartman set the all-time career assist record with a 23-kill performance. This broke Christina Ortiz's previous record of 2,313 set during the 2005-06 seasons. Hartman currently has 2373 assists in her three-year career.
Thursday will mark the sixth time in school history that Tarleton will compete in the LSC Championship tournament. The TexAnns last reached the postseason in 2008, where they lost in the second round to Abilene Christian.
This season, the Tarleton achieved a 22-9 regular season record, only their fifth 20-win season in the program's history. They went 8-6 in conference action, earning them the No. 5 seed.
Rachel Wolf has led the TexAnns with 325 kills on the year, while
Flynn Harrell has added 259 kills and
Irelis Ilarraza has added 251 kills. Hartman adds to her career record with 710 assists thus far on the season, with
Danielle Barker contributing 423 assists.
Defensively for Tarleton,
Shea McBrearty, another career-record holder, has 478 digs with Hatman providing 223 digs and Wolf adding 221 digs.
Monica Hamel holds down the front line with 82 blocks, while
Catherine Cutbirth has recorded 73 blocks.
The Mustangs (15-13, 9-5 conf.) are coming off three straight wins, including a victory over the TexAnns. They are led offensively by Karolina Damjanovic, who has 271 kills, and Shelbi Stewart, who has 268 kills. Taryn Westerman has collected 825 assists on the year, while Kiara Jordan has led Midwestern State with 417 digs.
